Water clarity

My tank has been up and running for a few months nows...all the occupants are doing great. My only complaint is the water has small particles floating around in it. It's not a huge problem...but u have see other tanks that are crystal clear. Can anyone tell me the trick to achieve this?

had the same problem..i put carbon in a sock an put it in the sump..over night it got clear..now Im not saying it will work for sure..but its a cheep rout to try..an worked for me..

I have a carbon filter in the sump as we speak...and it has helped tremendously

Hey Andrew, is it debris/detritus in the water column or are you getting micro-bubbles? Mechanical filtration (filter pads, micron socks, sponge blocks) work great at catching particulate out of the water and are easy to swap out/clean. If you are getting micro-bubbles you might need to modify your sump a bit. Its a bit of a pain to remove the sump to install bubble traps but it is totally worth doing.

How are the Astrea Snails doing?

Thanks for moving the thread...sorry for the mix up on my part. And I am not using a sock...there isn't enough room in my sump chamber for the reef octopus and sock :(. Louis the snails are doing ok...I lost about half of them, but the other ones are moving around and eating away.

if the sock doesn't fit, you can also use a fine mesh bag. If you have room put some poly filter material in it too. Just make sure you clean it often.

Can you take a pic of your sump for us? It would be easier to help with filter choices and placements if we had a visual.

Well I think I figured our part of my problem. I am sitting here relaxing, looking at the tank from a long day at work. I see my hermit crabs going to town on the hair algae, then see white spots coming out from where the crabs are eating and floating everywhere.

Here is a picture of the sump as requested.

While take the pictures I noticed hair algae growing in my reef octopus...is this bad (sorry if this is a dumb question...still learning this awesome hobby)?
