I have a 38 gallon that is 36" long, but my quad T5 is only about 30" long. I currently have it sitting on top of my glass top, all the corals look great and get enough light but I read it's not good to use glass tops bec it depletes the oxygen.

What is an alternative top that will be strong enough to hold my T5 and support aeration?

Is eggcrate strong enough?

And no I don't wanna hang my light from the ceiling...

Went back to look at your setup. Why not just run 2 crossbars of something and mount it to them with the existing legs?

Egg crate does being to sag a bit at 30", that's my main reason I have not put egg crate on top of my tank, I just leave the glass top open. I'm still going to switch, just trying to figure out how to make it sturdy enough to support it's own weight without being able to use most of the rear of the tank (HOB, overflow, pumps in way). If you can get 4 sides of support on the egg crate, you may be okay.

I believe he is asking if egg crate will support his t5 light fixture, which it won't. Right now his glass top is supporting the weight it looks.

Agreed. That's why I was saying I'm not even sure the egg crate intended for my tank would support itself, much less the light fixture. I might have concluded that in my head and never really got it into text.

Yea thats what i was afraid of, the weight of the fixture on the eggcrate. I may have to make some cross bars or something that would support the weight.

Maybe you could make some legs for it so it supports itself like most commercial units do?

It already has legs, but the fixture is too short to reach the length of the tank and not wide enough to reach side to side.

Thats why its sitting on top of the glass now.

I may try something like this... http://www.carolinafishtalk.com/forum/diy-section/16766-how-build-ada-inspired-lighting-stand.html
