Cyano During Cycling

Hey Everyone,
I am currently cycling my tank and am about a month in. I had an algae break out a few weeks ago but that subsided. Now, I have a HUGE cyano outbreak. The stuff is in the substrate, all over the rocks and even on the tank. There is also some green hair algae, which I am not as concerned about. Since I am still cycling, do I need to be concerned with the cyano yet, or does it only become a concern when cycling is finished? I have been scooping/scraping it off but it comes right back. The source was a rock a friend gave me to speed up the cycling process. Should I do something about it? If so, what can I do?

Hard to say without knowing more about your tank. Where do your nitrates sit? List your livestock, husbandry (how much and when you do water changes), using tap or ro/di water? Type of lights? How old are your bulbs?

Without those important pieces I would guess it is all part of the process and give it some time.

I have a Current 4X65 power compact light with new bulbs, a coralife skimmer and about 100 lbs of liverock in a 75 gallon tank. My skimmer is in a 20 gallon sump that sits below the tank. I use RO water and dont have any livestock yet as I am still cycling. I do have some macro algae (baseball sized clump of Chaedomorpha and some dragon's breath). Salinity is at about 1.024, Ammonia is 0, Nitrites are 4ppm and Nitrates are around 100. Bear in mind I am still cycling. Temps are consistently around 80 and photoperiod is 12 hours.

sounds like you are already doing what you should - remove what you can while doing water changes. you can probably reduce your photoperiod for now since you are just cycling the tank.
