View Full Version : Vortech controller holder

I've been struggling with various pieces of equipment lately and patience is running pretty short right now. I need to find a permanent solution for my Vortech controller falling off the wall. It is starting to drive me crazy.
Whoever thought that I want to pay 400 bucks for a powerhead and glueing it to the wall with sticky tape would be adequate?
Has anybody ever seen a real Vortech holder -perhaps some after market product?
I could envision a really simple brace type thing where the Vortech controller slides in from the top after the holder itself was screwed securely to the wall.

I've had success with strong/wide velcro...but if you really get pee'd off slap some liquid nail down. JK of course. Crazy they didn't make holes to screw mount. Even my coralife timers have that.

What about using the cord to support the weight? Try zip ties thats what I orginally did on my 180. I had some fastener type things that a zip tie would go through and that would use tape that stuck to the tank.

I've already taped and cable tied and stuff. I am tired of it. I just made a prototype out of a gladware container. The plastic is a little too bendy. I'll visit the container store and get some more heavy duty containers and make my own.

Was thinking of getting something made out of acrylic. I have a stand right next to my tank and thought that would look sweet.... It would be a simple design.

acrylic would be nice. Don't have any scraps left of acrylic and I am mounting mine onto a wood frame so I just dragged some thin-ish ply wood out of the garage. I'll probably just make some little wooden boxes tomorrow. Anything will be better than that stupid velcro sticky tape...

How wide are the controllers?
Europhyllia
Mon, 5th Sep 2011, 11:38 AM
1 1/4" thick, 5" tall, 3 1/4" wide
needs a 2" gap at the bottom for the cabels

I made a super ugly one out of wood this morning! lol
It works. Trying to convince Jack that Wet Acrylic should add Vortech holders to their offerings ;)

oh and this is important: there has to be access to the grey buttons without having to take the controller out of the holder since the grey buttons are used often (feeding delay, etc.)

I use double stick tape and have had no problems with the controller falling off.

Good for you ;)
I have two that hold no matter what and the other two don't hold -no matter what. lol
I've done doubles stick foam tape, double stick regular tape. Just taping the hole thing with packing tape, etc. I need a permanent solution that doesn't look dorky

I was thinking something as simple as this
http://www.displays2go.com/Product.aspx?ID=540
would be perfect IMO on my stand next to the tank.

Like this?
350gt
Mon, 5th Sep 2011, 07:07 PM
that could work too, as long as the buttons wouldnt be blocked.
Europhyllia
Mon, 5th Sep 2011, 08:12 PM
yes like this -as long as the buttons won't be blocked. :) And maybe in clear -we paid a lot of cash to have that brand name showing ;) (just kidding! lol)
Actually because the indicator lights go all the way across clear would be good.
As far as the grey buttons go the are located at a height of between 1.75" and 2.5" (measured from the bottom) and at their widest are 2.5" across)
Not sure if a center gap of 2.5 from top to bottom will still provide enough security in holding the unit in?
Just cutting it wider in that 1.75 to 2.5 area might be too much trouble though...

Ugh. :/
Back to the drawing board. I'll remake it in clear and widen the opening where the buttons are.
Right now the opening is 2" top to bottom.
No biggie. I didn't like the way this one came out anyway.

Sorry. :(
Don't redo it just for me though.
I think this could be a product that might sell well on your website!
I'll buy the first one though. In clear. :)
Just invoice me. If it works well, I'll buy 3 more after that to get them all matching ;)
2" at the bottom is perfect. That's sufficient clearance for the cables while providing maximum coverage.

I still have to drill and countersink the holes and flame polish it. I got tired of the mosquitoes.
I'm just a little guy. I can't afford to lose that much blood!

I got tired of the mosquitoes.
No kidding, they were after me today too. Where are they even coming from? I thought those things needed water to reproduce!
Oh yeah, I think we are also going to need a set of four of those. I just love how I come on here and discover things I need that I never knew I needed!

I am sure you can always 'customize' yours by putting stickers on it. In fact I may have a few Hello Kitty stickers I can bring you next time I see you. I got butterflies too!

I had thought about having Jack make some acrylic covers that would cover the dry side, that butt up to the glass. A simple upside down U shape to keep a tank overflow from damaging them. The only had part would be getting a watertight seal against the glass.

Well once we get the controller braces worked out you can abuse him for whatever you want to ;)
I bet he'll need to take a couple of days off from his real job once the final version is listed on the website and we post our glowing reviews on RC! Everybody will be ready to kiss those stupid velcro stickies bye-bye...
