Had a reef fanatic unit before and after 2 years it stopped working. I have a Tunze ATO now.
Honestly for the price I think it's kind of sad that the Tunze doesn't have the sensor to know when the refill container is dry.
On the plus side though it has an alert when the main tank overfills (not due to auto top off -more due to how I automated my water changes)

Tunze- Came with my 180 so Ive had it about 2-3 years now. Works great very accurate but I dont really need that accuracy for a large tank. I have it hooked up to a 32 gallon trashcan and fill that up weekly.

Yeah I haven't cleaned mine either? What is in your top off water that could clog it?

I haven't cleaned mine either, hasn't needed it. The pumps do go out sometimes (especially if you run them dry), but they are cheap to replace.

pump works fine i have it on a deltec kalk reactor which is crap also ( stirring stick broke off )

i thought it may have been the kalk reactor so i moved the sensor away from the drop off point of the reactor still the same issue i took the kalk reactor off line and still the same issue

so the sensor gets something on it and that's the problem?

Maybe your sensor is shot?

lol is that the conclusion you draw from this?
If my Tunze ever dies I'll probably go back to ReefFanatic or similar. I liked not having to burn out my pump just because the snazzy thing has no shut off for when the reservoir runs dry. I think that's totally annoying. Sure it's just 20 bucks and I've not had to replace a burned out pump yet - but come on for that price? When systems half that price come with it... the magnet mount is nice I'll give it that

These reason I like these over float switches is the infared sensor doesn't have the chance of getting stuck. Mine does turn off after running for, I think, 5 minutes or something along those lines.

I use a float sensor wired into an extension cord. A Tom's aqualifter is plugged into the cord. When juiced, the aqualifter pulls water from a 5 gallon jug. Total cost is about $25.

I have three jugs, one with Ca, the second with RO-DI, and the third with ALK. I switch back and forth between solutions -- 1,2,3,2,1 and so forth.

I use a second sensor higher up as a back up. another $9 or so.

Maintenance is cleaning the switch every so often to make sure those micro snails don't block the movement of the float. A little vinegar is all it takes.

The only other issue is that the outlet has to be higher than the jug of water or it will gravity feed into the sump as the aqualifter doesn't block that.
