I am looking at putting my new tank near my household thermostat and I am a bit concerned about the effects.

My questions are..
How will it affect the over all condition of the thermostat itself?
How will it affect the temperature read out?
Can I put a new thermostat somewhere else and bypass the old one so I don't have to patch a hole?

HA. Mine was behind my tank. Since I am renting, I just removed it from the wall, pulled the cable out enough to keep it from being behind the tank. It was a major PITA having it behind there for everyone but me in the house, since I had memorized all of the buttons. It did not affect the condition of the thermostat, although if it gets wet, it could blow a fuse. The temp showed a tad higher, but all that does is make the AC come on more often, and these days it's on all day anyway. To install a new thermostat, you need to use the cable from the current one, so the real answer to the last question is no. If you do replace that t-stat, make sure you count the amount of wires it currently has, and write down the make of the unit (the air handler). You will need that for when you go to choose a new t-stat. Some only come with enough spots for 6 wires, most homes have more wires for the t-stat than say, an apartment.

the difference in wires depends on what kind of system you have, a heatpump system single stage cool with dual stage heat will use 8 wires, red is hot, green is fan, yellow is cool, orange is reversing valve, white is 1 stage heat, black is second stage heat or emergency heat, blue is common, brown outdoor temp sensor optional. Conventional system is red is hot, green fan, white heat, yellow cool, blue common....and if your tank is next to your t-stat and generates a heat source it will affect the accuracy of your systems performance. like I mentioned Nate a remote thermostat can solve your problem... http://www.globalindustrial.com/p/hvac/controls/thermostats/honeywell-system-kit-wireless-focuspro-5-1-1-programmable-thermostat?utm_source=google_pr&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Thermostats-google_pr&infoParam.campaignId=T9F

I found that one for 284. I think I sold the wife on it simply because we can put the thermostat where we want. How hard is it to install?
