Has anyone ever taking the false back off of a biocube? I am interested to see pics. Thought about doing it to mine?

You planning on running a seperate sump? I wouldn't remove the sump area unless you have some kind of external filtration set up for it. I have heard of people removing that back area but have never seen it.

I am rebuilding my 29g. I was thinking of putting media baskets in back. But I have also thought of knocking out the back. Now would be the perfect time.

I don't have pics but I removed the back wall on my old bc14 and plumbed it into my larger tank for awhile. Removing the back is simple, it's just siliconed in. Before I removed the back I had a media basket, it was nice but on my bc29 I don't run one. I just removed the false bottom and filled the second chamber with rubble. I set a bag of carbon on top of the rubble and a bag of purigen where the stock foam was.(between chamber 2 and3)

I installed media baskets with some chaeto and love them! I have a 10 watt halogen light for growing my chaeto and everything works awesome! Mediabaskets.com sells the chaeto basket, media basket, and fish saver (keeps fish out of the sump area) for 89 bucks and very well made product. I would just mod the sump rather than ripping it out unless you plan on an external one. Moddin literally takes about 10 mins of your time with the baskets.

Unless you have some other form of filtration, wouldn't remove the false wall. As well, the false wall hides your equipment. What are your plans for the tank, if you removed it?

On my Finnex I have a Remora, heater, pump, carbon and cheato, all behind the false wall. It hides everything nicely!

I am at a point with my tank where everything is changing. I have temporary 10g set up for what I want to keep. I have heard of people knocking out the back wall, so I was curious. I personally think it defeats the purpose of the biocube. I have a fish list and a few corals that I am set on. That is the only thing that is fairly constant right now. I don't know everyone settles on a tank design/system. I am all over the place!

Eh, just mod out the back and put media baskets and some chaeto with a protein skimmer and you can have all kinds of corals in it. Next thing you would have to mod for heat purposes are the lights. My tank got up to 86 degrees today and my house temp is at 78 degrees! I'm about to remove the pc bulbs and go led with mine. Its nice having a tank that is so manageable and weekly water changes keeps everything happy :)

It's nearly $500 for the LED setup from Nanotuners.com. Mega-expensive.

I'm not spending that much on LEDs. Elegant Reef sells LED modules for 89 a piece and then the cost of a transformer. Very very bright LED ecoxotic modules. I'm sold on them. I'm only spending about 285.00 for 2 modules and a transformer. Worth every penny since the lights last 50000 hours and produce virtually no heat which is great for a tank with a top on it.

Yes it's easy. I have been keeping Sps, palys, zoas, lps in this tank for over a year. I just feel limited. I think that is why I can't make up my mind on how to set it up.. That is why I am getting rid of it. It is a great tank and a lot of fun for a lot of people. It is what got me hooked. Now it is time for it to entertain someone else.

There are some great prices on used 46 gallon and up tanks out there.

I wish. The 40g breeder is the biggest I can fit in the space I have.

Do you like them? Do you have SPS in your tank?

Do you have any pics of the install? Was it easy? Any trouble?

I don't have any pics of the setup but just a video under "my biocube 29" forum in nano tanks. It is very easy to install. I just had to remove the PC bulbs and sockets from the hood and then fasten the LED modules to the heat shield with some sheet metal screws. Plug and play pretty much.

Hey guys, tagging along. Do you think you can remove that back wall while the tank is up and running?

I wouldn't. You won't have any filtration left not to mention the damage you would do to the current tank inhabitants. The only reason I thought about it on mine was that the tank would have been down already.

The only way to Do it safely would be to have an external filtration system and carefully remove to prevent damage to livestock. It's only glued down by silicone so it wouldn't be hard at all to remove it. Nothing toxic will happen to the tank as it's not going to release bad stuff into the water.

ActuLly, the only filtration I have had in my cube for the past year and a half is biological...just rock and sand. It is only very recently that I even added a skimmer. I grow SPS, shrooms, LPS...pretty much anything. What I meant was, would removing the panel while tank is full present any hazards like leaks, etc.

My understanding is that it is a glass cube and the back wall is just a false wall that can be cut out. You would want to be careful at the bottom so that you do not damage that seal. Are all your chambers in the back empty?

having actually removed the backwall in my biocube and then making a new one the way I liked it and installing that one, I would say it would be near impossible to properly remove the entire back chambers with the system running. If memory serves correct, and I know on part of this it does, it just isnt a vertical back wall with baffles on it. there is actually a bottom to it as well and sides. It was a pain in the butt to get the silicone off enough to break the seal and rip out the plastic. And that was when it was dry I cant imagine doing it with stuff in the tank. This was on the biocube that isnt the current edition but the prior one so it is possible that on the new ones it is different.

Yeah, ok. Mine's been up and running for over 6 years, so it's definitely the old model. Thanks guys.

Nate, yeah, all the back chambers are empty...for awhile now.
