Looks like I may have a hunting opportunity on Camp Bullis, but what I need before I commit is a stand and feeder... for as little as possible :)

Let me know what you have, if anything.

Feeders are cheap enough - what do you want? With a little help we can build you a good stand if needed and do it reasonably. Have you looked into ground blinds yet?

If it were me I would commit and then worry about the "little" stuff. LOL

Your welcome to come and get the deer eating my landscaping and no blind needed, just use a bow it's quiet. LOL

Grouch,

You're inside city limits, right? Or I'd be tempted big time.

Hey John,

I'd be more than willing to work. I'll be bow hunting and want that down and away shot so the deer bleeds out quickly. And I think you're right, I may just pony up the $100 fee and worry about the logistics later. Not sure when we'll be able to set up the stand. Sometime in August.

No Allan outside city limits

Well, just in case you're serious, heck ya! I'll come out anytime you want me to thin out your herd a bit. :)
If you're kidding... haha, that was funny, you almost got me. :)

Hey John,
I committed. I won't have to produce a stand/feeder until middle of August. I'll be up there tomorrow morning paying for my tag to hunt there. This will be my first shot at whitetail. I'm getting kind of excited. :)

A buddy that I work with is toying around with a DIY build. I think he needs two feeders and two protein feeds. We were talking about picking up some 50 gallon containers and fabricating the legs and mounting struts.

I did not know you were a bow hunter Allan. I would still look into ground blinds. Might be out of your price range, but I have sat in Double Bull blinds before and they have to be the best I have ever seen and with them being fully blacked out you do not have to worry about camo. Just wear black.

You could do that, but it is almost as easy and cheap to buy the kits.

I hear you. I think the new feeders go for a bill at academy. I was hoping to bypass the newish cost as I'm doing this behind Gloria's back.

Up close and personal is why I like the bow. I want to try the Atlatl, but I think I lack the coordination. I'm going up to MN for bear late august and would love to try to bring one down with a knife.

I may have a tree stand or two laying around. I'll have to look when I get back home.
Feeders are easy to build. I've built tons of them out of 55gal barrels.
Tell me you shoot a recurve and not a girly compound bow and I'll be glad to let you use anything I have left from my bow hunting days. :)

Uh... Hmm... Well.... Yeah it's a compound.

I've been thinking of the recurve just to stand apart, but my skills aren't up to par for the recurve.

Geez, Allan and a recurve? Next he will be running around in a loin cloth with a feather on his head.

You have a bow already I guess.

Allen if I thought you could get away with hunting my front yard, you would be more than welcome but my neighbors prob wouldn't approve. And a bear with a knife, your just going to p**s him off. LOL

Yes, have a bow. 31" pull. Forgot what it's called. No blood on it yet though.

Know what you mean grouch. I shot a deer in my backyard in TN... Bad shot though. The deer were chuckling at me as they ran away. I was actually in my kitchen, Gloria was holding the door open for me.

I'm still learning jack, I will get there.

As far as a knife and bear, sure I might irritate the bear... But I will be getting upset as well especially if the knife isn't doing the trick.

Learn with a rock. Progress to the rifle. Not the other way around.

Allan,

What you want is a decent ground blind. One with "shoot thru" netting. You can find them online cheap. The folks with Double Bull have had a hard time defending their patents on this. You could make your own - the camo netting from Academy is what you use to shoot thru. The inside of the blind has to be BLACK for it to work.

The only problem with the shoot thru is that you will lose the first and last 5-10 minutes of the day. But as a beginner bow hunter, the deer not being able to see you move is HUGE. Most of them have a zipper that you can open up the netting with.

I have a Matthews Switchback, an INSANE bow. Love it.

P.S. I have to believe your draw length is more than 31"? Where did you get the bow?

Thanks Bill.

I got the bow at Bass Pro about three years ago. I've taken it hunting with a buddy of mine, but never got close enough to them to actually shoot one.

I'll look into the blinds... that way I can get online and facebook how bored I am waiting for bambi. :)

Oh yeah, I got my tag to hunt on post today, so I have to put up a feeder by middle of August.

...I may be able to borrow a buddy's feeder, but I'd like to own my own feeder.... but that's because I like to feed things ;-)

Allan - who measured your draw at 31". I'm short, and mine's 28". With those raptor wings of yours you HAVE to be more than 31"?

allan
Fri, 22nd Jul 2011, 01:35 PM
The little dude at the bass pro. He had me pull a measuring stick through the bow, measured at 31 using a trigger pull. It could be because with the raptor like wings I've got python like fingers... and adonis blood. :)

I don't have a good marker on my cheek, but my shot group is pretty tight.

Oh, just had lunch with my brother who is town for a wedding.

...no Bill, you're not short.

Bill S

adonis blood.

More like "tiger blood".

I just did a quick calculation - your draw should be your height / 2.5, approximately. That seems about right for you.

allan
Fri, 22nd Jul 2011, 02:25 PM
yep, that comes out to 31.6", my fingers are stretched out pretty comfortably.

Your draw length will increase a little as you shoot more. At least mine did. I would assume the same goes for a compound.
