I have done a bunch of searching on this subject and didn't really find anything that satisfied my questions. I am getting ready to purchase something in the next day or two and was wondering a few things. I heard that if you put chemipure in it should be replaced about every 4 months (if you keep up on water changes). How often do people change out chemipure elite? My assumption is you would have to change it out earlier because the carbon in the chemipure would be used up faster then 4 months. If this is the case, does it make more sense to get chemipure and carbon rather then elite so you can keep the chemipure in for its 4 monnths and replace the carbon at shorter increments? Hopefully this isn't too confusing. Thanks for your input.
How often do you change your chemipure, chemipure elite, and carbon?

Chemipure has carbon, just not GFO. The elite has GFO which should outlast the carbon. That's my understanding anyway. Someone please chime in if I'm wrong.

I thought carbon only lasted a few weeks. How does chemipure last a few months then?

I posted this at nano-reef since I haven't got much feedback here.

I agree. It will exhaust before then but might be useful still just as a place for beneficial bacteria to grow.
I think it's mainly a marketing thing (and I am saying that as a Marketing major lol).
We all want the easy solution and it promises that.
People put it in their tanks and say 'hey but it works for me!'
it might work for a few weeks and after that the tank just handles stuff with or without.
I am feeding massive amounts of food and don't use the stuff and my tank is thriving.
If I used the stuff I would probably feel like: "good thing I got chemi pure. look how well my tank is doing with it!"
I do use GFO in a reactor, no carbon.
There's a lot of stuff we like to buy that has never been proven to actually work. lol Just think of all the garlic elixir food craze, etc. No studies to indicate any effects or benefits but somebody had an idea, marketed it and other companies started offering it too.
Hm... I should be able to come up with some kind of unsubstantiated claim that I can market and use to sell product to eager aquarists....:innocent2:
Thanks for the idea. I'll be back with my 'fish cure through beneficial bacteria' shortly!!!
(sad part is even though I just made that up myself I already have the urge to buy some bacteria based fish medication now!)
