Custom Tank Build with 1/4" glass

Hey folks,
So I came by four 6'x6' sheets of 1/4" thick glass and a 6'x6' sliding glass door. I'm going to be stripping all the framing off the glass panels and looking to build my first 'home built' tank. So I've gotten mixed information with regards to what I'm going to be able to do here, and would love for anyone with experience doing this to chime in. For all these questions, let's just assume for the time being that this is non-tempered glass.

1. I can't make my tank any taller than 18". Is this accurate? As I've also heard 14".

2. I can make the tank any width or length that I want to. Again, is this accurate?

3. Can I glue two panels together in any way shape or form to grant the strength of a 1/2" piece of glass? Haven't found an answer to this question anywhere, and I'm sure it's a horrible idea, but still wanted an answer on it.

4. If I can glue the two panels together, how do I keep the adhesive from blurring/distorting the ability to view through the panels, or is this something best handled by professionals?

5. Are there any other tricks/tips that can be used to make the tank taller or bigger using the 1/4" glass?

6. Should I just scrap this and wait until I can get 3/4" glass to do my dream 500 gallon build? :)

most of the diy plans and advice i have seen recommend a 14" max height with 1/4" glass. not sure how big you could go on the footprint, but if you go bigger than 24" or so, i would recommend bracing the top. you could possibly eurobrace the top to avoid a center brace. personally, my opinion is option #6 if you are dead set on building your own tank. i built a 180 and it was probably the most difficult project i have ever done - and i ordered the glass already cut and cleaned on the edges.

IMO this is best left to experts, tanks are cheapest part of the hobby. I know for a fact that any LFS do not make a lot of money off glass. i wouldn't chance my house to a 500g oops or any other size. plus you get a warranty on tanks if you buy tank and stand combo.

Good advice Chris. I like the comment about the tanks being the least expensive part. Soooo true.

Mkay. In that case, I may just use the glass to build out a few smaller tanks for S&Gs. We'll see.
