Some of you may have experience with the devil himself "Bryopsis". Dun duh dun....lol. For those of you that got down on your knees praying the nightmare would end, I may have stumbled on a possible resolution.

H2O2 Is a great tool against algae. I've been using it since I found this article by Justin Credable

Thank you BOTH for posting these Links !

I will soon Bring the Fire to the War against the Devil Algae called Bryopsis

Suppose I should start a thread with pics to show my findings as well

This does sound promising... Wish I could roll back the clock a couple of years...

I just had success with raising mag to 1700 using Kent marine tech m. thanks for the info :)

I've had semi success with Tech M but it took a ton of it. This method is definitely for the less patient. I would get extreme satisfaction watching bryopsis die instantly. Just saying.....

I would treat the peroxide as if it is killing ALL forms of life including bacteria. I've done H2O2 dips and found many snails, pods, and mini brittle starfish dead on contact. It will also bleach your rock or frag plug completely white, killing coralline too. It works wonders, but be sure to exercise extra caution.

I've been meaning to update this and James' thread gave me the encouragement I needed. In the past, 5 minute dips has been great for hair algae, red algaes, and caulerpa. I've had an unknown strain of algae growing through some zoas that I decided to dip last week. Also attached to the zoas was a mussel that I had thought was an empty shell since I bought the zoas. A week after the dip I noticed this tough piece algae growing back..... as well as the mussel being alive.

I'm guessing that zoas seem to be least affected because the can close themselves up w/ a protective shell not unlike mussels. I haven't used peroxide on briopsis, but I suspect 5 minutes should be sufficient for most anything. I'm really surprised this strain of algae didn't die. I'm almost tempted to let it grow out past the stalk stage to get an ID on it.

Folks, just remember, there are something like 28 species of bryopsis. Not all are the same.

I tried it the other day when I did a water change. Alot of the hair algae fell off while in tub of h2o2

In the nano link it looks more like hair algae than bryopsis. Using oxidizers to clean up water and algae problems is nothing new (I've used potassium permangenate many times) but I'd be pretty skeptical that it's a cure all for bryopsis.

I picked up a few frags a while back that had bryopsis on them, so I have been holding them in my qt. So, with nothing to lose, I dipped them in a solution of 70% tank water/30% hydrogen peroxide (3%). I'll admit, I was really skeptical. I let them soak for 90 seconds, then returned to my qt. Within 24 hours, the bryopsis turned white, died and sloughed off. The corals were pretty ****ed the first day, now they are hugely open and very happy. I did this two weeks ago, one time. As of right now, no bryopsis has returned at all. The corals I dipped were: sunset monti, blood red chalice, blasto merletti, clove polyps, zoas, flowerpots, shrooms, finger leather, plus a few more. The only ones that got majorly ****ed were the clove polyps. It took them a few days to open up again. Of course, it also killed the money plant growing on one of the big frags, but I can stand to lose that to be rid of the bryopsis.

It worked very well for me, ymmv.

I gotta tell ya Ace, I really didn't think it would work. But, just.....wow. The blastos were almost dead because of the stinking bryopsis crowding them out, now, they are the size of a golf ball, and I saw three new babies popping up around the edges. It never even tried to grow when the algae was on it. And my flowerpot is extending out of its skeleton for the very first time! It was just so weird. When I dipped them, it looked like nothing at all had happened, even when I checked before I went to bed. I thought "oh well, didn't work". The next day when the lights came on, I did a double take, because the horrid algae was ghostly white and sloughing off. And it hasn't come back. I am adding a peroxide dip to my regimen for new frags that come in. It sure worked for me.

Oh, that elegance you asked about in an earlier post.....I've had it about six months. Got to move it into one of my other tanks, since it gets so huge. It's starting an argument with my duncans.

That's funny, I just opened this thread to see if anyone had started dipping frags using this method to prevent algae hitchhikers. I guess you answered my question. I'll probably start doing this as well. I wonder if makers of coral dips will start using some peroxide in their formula?

I had a bad experience using a mixture of coral rx, FW, and H2O2 dips. Hindsight being 20/20 I could have skipped the FW dip since H2O2 is FW w/ an extra O molecule. I lost two out of three frags of zoas. I've dipped zoas several times so I attribute the casualties to over doing the tres combo.

I am having a bit of a battle with algae, phosphates and such so I am going to dip some frags tonight and Ill let you guys know how it goes. Thanks for the great info and posts. I actually watched the youtube video of Justin Credible about a month or two ago before I even saw this thread but I was afraid to actually try it. Guess it works.

Happy reefing all.

Josh, I thought I saw a few tufts of asparagopsis in your sump.

I would seriously recommend anyone having problems was nuisance algae try dosing iron to increase algae production in their fuges. It seems counter-productive, but it works. The cheato and other beneficial macros out compete bryopsis and the other unwanted algaes for nutrients and minerals.
