just hooked up a 5 stage ro/di system today but need to buy a tds meter. i have let the system run for about an hour and dumped the water that came out. now i'm saving the rest and am curiousz if i can assume the tds out of the system is zero since it is new or should i wait to use the water until i buy a tds meter. i want to do a water change asap. what do you think?

the only thing i would worry about is if you didn't hook it up correctly

The color changes when the DI Resin is exhausted. I'd try to incorporate a flush kit or an alternate water line before the DI resin so as to not exhaust it so quickly. Most RO units take about 2-5 minutes of run time before the optimal TDS is reached. Then you can close the valve and send the lowest TDS water possible through the DI unit; thus extending the life of your DI resin. I'd incorporate a dual in line TDS meter if I were you. Put one of the sensors after the RO unit, then one after the DI unit.

so i should put a shutoff first. let the water drain out before the di resin for 5 minutes then close the drain and open the line to di resin and collect that water. is that what you are saying. it makes sense.

(Water From Kitchen Sink)--->(RO Unit)--->(TDS Sensor)--->(Tee w/Valve to allow Higher TDS Water to drain to the sink)--->(DI Unit)--->(TDS Sensor)--->(Valve)---> = 0 TDS Water .

This is how I have it set up on mine. Simply turn the valves to allow the water to flow before or after the DI unit. The in line TDS Meter tells me when to shut the valve where the Tee is and open the valve after the DI unit.

Nope... no time for a drawing at the moment.

Typing this on my phone.

That's better than what I could do on my phone, lol.

Your resin should not be changing color after just a few minutes of run time. Are you certain the system has a RO membrane installed?

Hopefully the instructions for yur new system walked you through flushing each stage/filter independently. By the time you get to flushing the DI stage, it would only require an additional 10 minutes or so.
