I am thinking of using a submersible return for my new setup. I am doing plenty of reading on this but would like others opinions since I have never run a submersible return pump.. My two main concerns are heat and noise,,, what is the best bang for my buck at around 800 to 1000 ghp.

sicce pumps are awesome, i use one 3.0 for my return, and one 1.5 for reactor, i have a 6 bulb t5 under a cnaopy and just 2 4-5 inch fans and my tank stays 76-78 all day.

I would say Sicce as far as quality goes hands down. But the new Aquaticlife return pumps are pretty good and on the spec sheets they put out just over 950 gph and have good head pressure. And are supposed to be 3 watts more efficient. However, I have heard of a possible noise concern with these pumps.

Sicce and Eheim get my vote from experience.

We have the same Eheim 1262 we have had for 10 years with the original gaskets and impeller. It is as close to silent as air. It puts out 900 gph.

Well... Since Mike qualified it as "bang for your buck"... Our Quiet One pumps have been excellent. They stop and start a couple of times a day. Until you get to the BIG pumps, they are quiet too..

wholehearted endorsement of eheim. never had an issue other than cord fraying, even after much abuse. worked perfectly even after a number of drops that destroyed the entire housing.

another vote for sicce - the 5.0 is what pushes the closed loop on my tank at home.

thanks for all the input... kind of backs up my thinking.. i was leaning towards the quiet one, because of price.. and may get a Sicce 4.0 if the money is flowing in the right direction.. I know Eheim has been around and is very reliable and i have used them before for other applications... but I'm just not a fan of their design.

You need to double check this, but it seems to me that the Sicce have a smaller footprint than most too Mike.

what are you using it for? return? did you check the flow chart?
I had a 3.0 as a reactor pump and it was perfect for that. To be honest for a return pump I probably would have chosen the 3.5 instead because of the large drop in head pressure on the 3.0
