I am heading for the coast, bucket in hand. :D

I am hoping I can either tag along when Solid is collecting grass shrimp or get some good directions on where to find them.

So grass shrimp are definitely on my list.

What else can I get? Do we have pretty much the same stuff Florida has? Or no?

What about Chitons?

Right after one of last years hurricanes I found a bunch of zig zag perriwinkles out of the water on grass stalks. It was beside a road and there was alot of oil run off. They didn't make it overnight.

I think I already have Periwinkles. I bought some and now I have gazillions. Unless they're Collonista snails which is of course entirely possible. Do Periwinkles breed in the aquarium?

We only have black mangroves in the Corpus/Port Aransas area. Any where along the back side (bay side) of Mustang/Padre Island, or along the Kenedy Causeway where you find shoal grass (Halodule wrightii) you should find a couple of species of grass shrimp. If you are lucky, you can also get some cool looking virgin nerite snails (Neritina virginea) in the grass beds.

Hmm, grass shrimp. I am assuming you are intending to feed the sea horses? Our lion would love some. Is a whole group from MAAST going or just you guys?

Just a personal trip :)
Yes, yes for the seahorses. I know the petstore ones are wild caught too and of course that could be a concern for the seahorses but I just learned on the seahorse board that you can feed them the anti-parasite fish food and make them safe that way. :)

okay dumb question:
how do I dress for collecting?

barefoot? old chucks? rubber boots? is it shallow water with icky sticky things (urchins maybe?) in it?

If the jetties in CC are like they are in Port A, they are steep and slippery. Slabs of concrete, set at odd angles, algae growing on them. Lots of stories about falling...

okay I might mail order the chitons and just focus on shrimp then!

Distance be between grass shrimp areas I use and the jetties are about 30 minutes away from each other on a clear driving day. During Spring break it would probably take an hour or longer between the sites. Nerites snails are seasonal. There might be some where I usually collect them, but they are almost certain to be really tiny. Like the size of a bee-bee. There are always a couple of different favorite spots that people use to find various things.

Clothes To Wear:

Upper Body: Any old tee shirt will work

Lower Body: Shorts usually do the trick

Hands: a good pair of leather garden gloves help to lift and hold rocks when I'm looking for porcelain crabs. I like a good steel\aluminum rimmed net with smaller type holes usually works best.

Feet: I like to wear a good pair of tight laced sneakers in and out of the water. I use a pair or older sneakers for this, not the good ones you go out and about in, but the ones we were to cut the grass and do yard work. Sneakers keep your feet from being cut by oyster shells and other foreign objects.

Skin: Wear sunblock if you burn easily. It's easy to lose track of time while collecting

As you already know, I'm going this weekend. After more research I'm going to take a seine net as well. I'll let you know how it goes and what we're able to collect. My buddy (Raven on here) is going as well.

With the warmer weather; If anything there is 10 times as much as there was before. :)

Ok...I caught this little guy yesterday. He was starring up at me in my bucket. He has big eyes and he has little feet and his tail pops out to almost propel him around...lol, then he tucks it under and looks like a little ball. What is he?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hey, how is raven? Haven't seen him on here much lately.

That's a cool catch, Tate. Kind of looks like a box fish of some kind. With feet?

After doing a little more collecting yesterday, that is what we figured after catching a few more...some a little older. Too bad. I was hoping we found some cool critter.
