I just got a metal halide fixture that is 150w. It will be over my 10 gallon tank and I need to raise it above the tank without using the ceiling or the wall next to it. Does anyone have any good ideas on how I would be able to do this? I have heard that conduit piping would work.

What exactly is conduit piping? Is it metal or plastic like PVC?

How high should I hang the fixture above the tank?

Has anyone done anything other than the conduit?

Also the cheaper the better!

Thanks everyone!

Do you have a build thread? Or a diagram? And how much did you pay for the conduit?

A shelf... Book case shelf built behind the tank (off the wall), and you would have an area to place one of those vases or decorative pieces the women are always talking about.

I paid like 20-30 dollars at most, just go to home depot and ask for conduit your going to need a hack saw or something to cut metal. the way I attached it was directly to my stand with metal straps they sell for running conduit up walls, you will see all the fittings and stuff in the same isle.

I would totally do that but my dorm is TINY.. I may just build a canopy and attach the front panel with a magnet.

look towards the end. Sean used a piece of conduit and a bender to make a really sweet pendant holder. Inexpensive and awesome

I started building a "canopy" with no lid. I'm trying to figure out how to make the entire front of the canopy removable. As it is, the halide bulb will be 10" above the water level, it looks pretty good right now, just have to add more blocks to make it stable.

Any ideas on how I can make the front removable?

I'm bouncing Ideas around and right now I'm thinking some kind of magnet or maybe like four L brackets to make it slide into place.
