I was looking at a light fixture at texas tropical for my 75 gallon tank. It was a coralife 48" with 4 bulbs for under $300 but someone told me it's cheaper to buy a kit and do it myself. If I were to do it myself is this ballast all i need besides the caps and bulbs.

The DIY way is a retro kit. You would need caps, ballasts, good reflectors, bulbs. This is a good idea if you are using a canopy because it allows heat to disipate easier. IMO if you are not using a canopy a fixture is the way to go because it looks cleaner.
