Sandbox!!!!
That's what that is. I couldn't figure it out. That's a unique design.
For the benefit of some of the newer guys here. Mike's last tank had a very large fuge, about two feet by two feet and 18" deep. Within that fuge he had a plateau built up. A one by one foot square that was filled with sand.
Really neat design. I've tried to copy it but his fuge just looked a lot better with the island and all the other stuff.
I've not seen another fuge like his as most tend to follow the traditional form that you see everywhere.
Mike,
Have you done your sump/fuge yet?

OK, so i had the day off and decided i would build myself a sump.. ITS NOT PRETTY! and I sill need to route some edges but it will get the job done. it is designed in the shape of a "U".. back right is overflow, then mechanical filtration section, then turning corner and front is refugium then skimmer section and finally return
http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o258/itili/003-4.jpg

If I was to follow conventional wisdom? and if They made a skimmer that powerful! probably! but then, we see almost no one with a refugium above their tanks being gravity feed into the main display.. just not practical or eye appealing...I think no matter what road blocks you throw up, the benefits of a refugium will make their way into your main system. in my case, its mainly for added filtration but no one can go wrong with a properly set up refugium no matter where its located.:)

Will do,, I think they will work great.. they can move the sump almost 18" but I really only need about 8"-10" of movement. Just enough to get to the pumps and electrical behind the sump.. the base that the sumps sits on extends 8" into the cabinet so my pump slides out as well and I can easily remove it for maintenance.. my only big concern is rust down the road but i plan on keeping them well lubricated

In one of the previous photos of the structure, it doesn't look as if it touches the bottom of the aquarium in many places.
Did you even the bottom out?
Are you worried about the structure bowing/sagging?
Can I have a dollar? Two?
Will you drill holes in the top of the structure to prevent air bubbles from collecting underneath?

So I wake up this morning to the temporary pump sucking a bit of air and the floor around the aquarium is damp... not good.!! I found a small leak where the flexible drain line connects to the overflow pipe. I had to get to work so I just sat a container under it to contain the drip till I got home.. I come home and the water level has not moved and the drain line and container are completely Dry.. no sign of any leak.. The good news,, with a sump full of sand water and live rock rubble I was able to pull the sump out on the glides with no problem... I like that!.. now to fugure out why it was leaking and now isn't

Well, my system is now fully operational.. I have the auto top of installed, no leaks anywhere, sump needed a baffle that I was able to add in about 10 min with a pice of acrylic I found at home... and it even has 3 Chromis swimming around in it.. only problem is....... the sicce 3.0 is the perfect size pump for my overflow and sump capabilities but is not nearly enough flow in the tank.. so i'm going to have to get two small powerheads, one for each corner.. they will fit under the overflow on both sides of the tank so they should be almost invisible and wont be a distraction to the awsomeness i'm about to create!!!

Nerite snails are not the smartest creatures on the planet and many times they feel content to crawl right out of the aquarium..maybe they should call them suicide snails as I have placed many a snail back in the water over the years after finding them on the outside of the glass (hello, get your $1.99 butt back on the right side of the glass). anyway, the two days ago I saw what looked like a rock laying about 4 feet from my aquarium( having a 5 year old does not make this a strange occurance) so I ignored it and forgot about it..well, this morning, for lack of anything better to do, i go and look to see whats laying on my floor. Turns out to be Harry Carry himself...Dont know how he got so far from the aquarium without realizing, " hey, this may not end well". Anyway, it's two days later and I pick him up and toss him back in the tank,,he turns himself over and goes about his business like nothing happened,, well, except for the almost audible Jeers and laughter from the other 6 that have all had their faces pressed up against the same side of the glass for the last two days..

well, it looks like my new adventure may be over before it really begins... I left my garage open last night because my kiddo started vomiting and I went in to help him get to bed.. forgot to close garage door,,, Many hundreds of $ worth of tools and equipment were stolen from me.. I filed police report but i know how that will turn out.. then I get told at work that i'm moving to a new location and It will cost me another $120 a month to drive to that location.. then I get home tonight to find a leak in the aquarium itself... not the plumbing but the actual aquarium... its not worth fixing and i simply have no money to buy a new one.... more to come.....

I picked up my replacement tank today...(thanks Mark)... was working hard on preping it to make the switch tomorrow and at about 10 pm realized that the silicone I had bought from lowes yesterday.. was HARD in the tube... my efforts came to a screeching halt... as now there will be no time for the silicone to dry before the end of the day tomorrow... now i'm stuck probably for another week till i'm off again..I did manage to get the tank clean though

This thread really went downhill..... NO MORE BAD NEWS!!!!
Wow, it is extremely rare to have such a shallow tank leak. Could it possibly be the stand? I had 2-30g drain on me, and the stand ended up being the culprit. The stand was slightly off from corner to corner. It put just enough stess on the seem to cause it to rupture. Just a thought
I am looking forward to see what creative ideas you come up with. :)Good things:)

figured I would give an update on my tank since it is now 2 months old and since there has been a bunch of talk about coralife salt...I have been dealing with a nasty Bacteria bloom for over two weeks now.( for those that may not know.. it looks like a very hazy day... only in the water... mine was so bad i could not see 4 inches into the tank.. I couldn't really find a cause other than its just a new tank and they will sometimes do this.. but I suspect now that the salt may be somewhat of a factor.. its really the only change I made before the bloom started. I opened a new bag of coralife. not saying thats it for sure, but i should have seen some clearing in two weeks if I have been doing all the right things to remedy the issue...exept water changes from the fresh bag of salt. anyway, I bought a UV sterilizer yesterday morning and put it in place. this afternoon I can almost see to the back of the tank... by tomorrow there should be almost no cloudiness left... all the fish,corals,clams,snails,etc.. are completely fine. the only casualty (if you can call it that, and I will) is the purple rim green cap I got from John... it is growing like crazy but when the bloom started, it turned completely brown:cry_smile:,, I'm sure with the water clearing up the color will come back.

Have decided on the fish list that will finish out my tank. They are as follows:
Grade A Picasso/Onyx pair
5 Disbar Anthias
"Pair" of ORA Mandarins - ("Hint Hint" LFS's)
Melanurus Wrasses (female)
It will have lots of different coral Types... but this is my clownfish/RBTA tank, so they will have run of the house...

have you continued adding new salt over that 2-week period?
If not then I'd think it wouldn't be very likely for the bloom to persist for that long even if the salt was contaminated somehow.
I've dosed pure ammonium chloride powder to cycle a tank and even with an ammonia level of over 4.0 the bloom didn't last longer than a couple of days.
For it to last longer I'd think something is still releasing or being added

I've had better luck with pairing mandarins when they were very different in size. In my case that turned out to be a big old male with a tiny new female. Others have experienced it the other way around. I got my first pair at the same time and they were similar in size and fighting way more. If mine ever die and I start over I'd get one first, wait a few months and then get the next one

Ok, I don't know much about snails but this is weird.. I have about 20 or so nassarius snails from 1/2" up to over 1" for the second day in a row now they have all climbed out of the sand, gone to the corner of the tank, gotten in a big pile and started floping all around and crawling all over each other.. Kind of reminds me a mating ball with snakes.. then they will all crawl away and do their own thing again.. none have died,,, I'm wondering if this is some sort of mating behavior? I cant seem to find a whole lot of info on this. have never see this before.
this clip is right after they have all started to disperse.

Well, I think I was the very first to adopt one of Lorraine's clowns... A very nice little fish. "She" will become my female. She spent thie night in her new digs with all the circulation pumps turned off. this morning I turned one on and will turn the others on over the next two weeks... here are some of my usually bad pics

No, she is on the other side of the tank... It may be a while before she is strong enough to hang out with the anemone. current is pretty strong in that area...

I Keep changing my mind...."Gunshot" ( my kiddos name for our new Picasso), sounded more like a boys name soooo..... Meet Gunshots new girlfriend, She is a young Very Semi Picasso,(but Picasso non the less). I think she will develope a little more but I like her either way. So far they have been getting along great. some of the usual posturing but No fighting!!! I have a breeders net just in case things get tense and I need to protect my investment.. but looks like all is well and maybe in a year or so little Gunshot can live up to his name!:bigsmile: any way here are my usually crudy pics

I think most recommendations I've seen are to start at about 30% power and up it just a couple % every day. Or else you will ruin/bleach your stuff

We talked about that too Karin. When I sold Mike the light I had no idea it was that bright. Watts on led really don't get affected by water depth or distance from tank much from what I can tell. Chalk it up to something new.
The colors on the coral are looking way better already.
Rob, the tri-color is way sick Dude. I can't wait to get the one I won from you under the led in my tank when it is cycled out.

SAD DAY! I Had to Euthanize my semi picasso clown today... She was looking sick for a few days and this morning she was in really bad shape.. missing her entire tale and had some sort of disease I guess looked almost like Ick.. all over her body but much worse looking than any ick I have ever seen... anyway.. she wasn't doing well and I didn't want to chance by baby picasso from lorraine to get what ever it was... soooo..... anyway... I hope my little one is going to be ok!!!!

Yikes Mike! Sounds like brook. Is the little one still doing ok?
Have you considered a precautionary pH adjusted hyposalinity treatment? Might also want to have some formalin on hand in case you see any signs of a problem.
They go down fast.
Keep me posted.

Looking at all the symptoms,, im almost sure it was Brooklynella. now the heartbreaking part... I took a 7 day vacation right after this and the baby Picasso died as well... The baby was doing great right from the start..I should not have added the new clown within 10 days of leaving for vacation...I already know all the "what ifs" and "should haves". The problem now is that I set this tank up with the sole purpose of Keeping those Picasso clowns. The tank has seemed very lonely since i have gotten home and to tell the truth I have had ZERO desire to even look at it or do the basic maintenance... I still do it! but I avoid my office as much as possible right now. Its got me extremely sad and i'm not really sure what my next move will be. I guess i will go empty the skimmer.................

Mike, I went through this when I introduced new fish after we moved to Texas and know how you feel. I was very fortunate that my treatment worked on my Picasso pair, but I lost the male of my Bluespot pair. It was tough, and I didn't care about anything. I treated what I didn't lose and let the tank go fallow, looking at an empty tank is depressing, but time passed. Everything I have put in it since has thrived and THAT has been rewarding. I still miss my male Bluespot, he was a once in a lifetime fish!
I can get you another one, just make sure it's environment is healthy first.

Updated shots of Tyree flower Pedal Cap... This thing had a large burned spot when I brought it home from a fight with a Hispida.. It totally browned out and had a huge bald spot.

So I have been doing basic maintenance... like filters, skimmer etc.. but have not been monitoring anything else very closely... well a few days ago i noticed some recession on the base of my corals... I was busy with work for a couple of days and couldn't diagnose the issue although the symptoms pointed to low PH... well, this morning I get up and go to find the issue and decide to test my PH first... BINGO! literally about 7.2 Water changes and baking soda here i come!!!
Europhyllia
Wed, 21st Sep 2011, 08:29 AM
what's your alkalinity?
Can it be 7.2? That's almost like tap water. If you were closer I'd let you use my pH meter just to double check before you up it.
Texreefer
Wed, 21st Sep 2011, 08:34 AM
Alkalinity is low as well at 2.4 Meq/l.. I'm sure my Ph is probably a little higher than that since I don't have an accurate measurement but i'm positive that is the problem

Been there, almost exactly two years ago to the day our AC gasped its last breath. And the new system was very pricey, so I feel your pain there. We put extra fans blowing over the water and floated a couple frozen water bottles in the sump. The tank was just about the only thing in the house that didn't overheat.
Good luck and shout if you need anything, including fans (or an AC window unit for the bedroom.)

I recently went through this prb and my tank topped 87F aswell .... With tank size u hve u should be fine in lowering the temp.... What I did was bought a table fan from wall mart ... Place it on a shelve or a stand high so the air is hitting ur water.... I always hve zip lock bags of ice ready for this situation and it came down to 83... 83 is normal and not panicking temp for the reef .. Yes 86 is panicking and needed to be controlled but not lethal that ur reef can't handle it for a day or two...
I guess jack mentioned in my thread that there's a loaner chiller for Maast members that u might Wana get....
