It's not a fake... LoL... I was standing on top of the new Hyatt hotel... It's a tilt and shift... It's made to look like a toy model.... But it's a real shot of downtown...

I know silly ;)

But the image definitely reminds me of a model train town :)

That is pretty cool. It does look like a model set.

Forget the train coming around the corner - I'm waiting for the giant or godzilla to come through.LOL

Alright man I was gonna see if you wanted to go down to the tower and do some tilt-shift photography!! Its awesome you did this! That is a perfect shot.
I dont have a tilt shift lens so I manipulate mine in PS. Do you use a tilt/shift lens?

So are you famous?
If you got an exhibit coming up you should post it. I bet lots of people from here would come to see your work!

Thanks Cory.... I actually pulled this off in post processing... I don't do many T/S shots so there is really no need for a T/S lens for me.

Bro I would love to get everyone together and do a photowalk or something downtown some time. I went downtown this past weekend to try and get some street photography in and I am so hooked it's unreal. I have fallen in love with street photography I'm wishing I lived closer to downtown. Really really great stuff... So any time you want to head downtown just let me know... I'm always game... Check out my flickr page to see some of the shots that I got. I could stay downtown all day and night getting shots.

So are you famous?

You are way too sweet Karin... Am I famous...? Pfft... Far from it... LoL... To be honest I don't even really print out my work. Everyone seems to really get on to me about it, I just don't think my stuff is all that good.. A lot of people see the good stuff in my photos, but all I see are the bad. I guess I'm my own worst critic... :D

lol, well I thought it was fake! That's amazing. Great shot Dustin. You know all the tricks homie.

Thanks a ton, Rob... I wouldn't say I know all the tricks, but I'm getting there... LoL... :D

Any rate, really neat pic dude.

Let's do it.
Would you like to show your work on a larger/ more 'official' scale?

ErikH
Tue, 22nd Feb 2011, 04:25 PM
Dustin,
Stop being so critical of your work. If everyone gives you compliments, then it means you're doing great. Get your stuff out there! Sometimes being your own worst critic is the only thing that holds you back. DON'T LET IT! :D

Awesome pic as always.

I've never heard of first friday... What is that? You guys are really nice, and I really appreciate the kind words.... Really, it means a lot... Good stuff to hear on my 33rd birthday...

Awwww!! Happy Birthday Dustin!

We're not being nice. You really are that good.

First Friday is a celebration every month in the downtown King William district, with restaurants/bars, live music, but especially the arts. Have you checked out Blue Star Art Galleries (on S. Alamo)? That's where the biggest Arts contributors come in, although there are things displayed here and there in some of the other eateries. My mother-in-law is a potter with a studio at Blue Star and she pretty much makes her whole month's income on First Friday.

Wow you guys are awesome... I'll have to go downtown for the this one coming up. I would love to see how it all works... I would love to show off some of my photos just to hear what others have to say. That would be really cool... And yes, I just moved here.. Well I've been here for about 4 years. But I'm originally from Miami, Florida. God, I miss the beach.. LoL

Regric25

So i thought it would be cool to post a tilt shift style photo that I did. Its my only one though... I dont have many aerial shots... The tilt shift photo is the 4th one with the whale tails. I also included some shots from when I went down town at night.

I want to see what y'all can do with good tank shots.

TaknByD
Wed, 23rd Feb 2011, 12:37 AM
Getting a T/S shot in a tank would be pretty hard... I would think anyway... First I would thing you'd need a big tank and nice wide angle lens... Even with that I'm not sure it's possible... With t/s shots you get your best results when shooting from above at a 45 degree angle. I use photoshop for all of my post processing and I just use a gradient mask and run a lens blur on top of that. But to get the best shot I would believe the 45 degree angle from above is a must in my opinion... Great shots btw, Rick...

CoryDude
Wed, 23rd Feb 2011, 10:31 AM
If I had mad money to spend, I'd get a t/s lens just for some of the nature shots I'd like to take.

But, the fact you achieved this good a look in post-processing is awesome. Do you shoot in raw mode?

Regric25
Wed, 23rd Feb 2011, 11:36 AM
Thanks! The way you do it is exactly the way I do it. Gradient mask but I use gaussien blur instead because I dont have lens blur..
I also increase the saturation and contrast to give it that "model" look.

TaknByD
Wed, 23rd Feb 2011, 12:31 PM
Same here Rick... I totally forgot to mention that one too... Gaussien blur works just fine, I just tend to like lens blur a little better for the whole t/s thing. :D

Awesome shots Rick. Dustin, we're the same age, until October :) First Friday is a staple really. It's way too much fun to go to when it's early in the year because it's cool. Lots of good beer too!

The parking lot one really looks toy sized. What time of year did you go to Pike's Peak? I went in August and got stuck in a hail storm and snow. Def. not short sleeve weather then

Pretty sure that was in late June of '09. We've gone 4 times now for the PPIHC, and yes, we've gotten stuck in hail storms, thunderstorms, and a bit of snow before.

cool shots Rick...I like the Sea World one.

hey...Zinc's! haha...my wife and I used to go there all the time when we were first dating, I've seen so many "names" at Zinc's, they would host private parties in the wine cellar...I was a starving artist at the time and would meet a lot of characters at Zinc's, that's when I was also working as a storyboard artist and used to hang out at Bauhaus Media group waiting for scripts to storyboard...which was in the same building as Zinc's at the time. not sure what place I spent more time at. thx for the trip down memory lane....

back to Tilt-Shift.

I took another T/S style pic about 1.5 weeks ago. I was on the Tower of Americas platform. This was taken with my 200mm zoom lens and refined in photoshop. I know its basically the same shot a Dustin but it's honestly the brightest thing down there. lol

I also got some video of the river boats and at a dog park. I was not high enough so it isnt as good as it would have been if I was on the roof but enjoy anyway.

I cant figure out how to post the videos so here are the links

There is a lens called a tilt shift lens that can be used but most of them like mine are done in post processing.

I'd LOVE to get a tilt shift lens, but as with most good lenses, out of my budget. At least until my tank is done! Like that is ever a reality.

The whole concept behind TS is to make it look like a model, which is why they are awesome. Now that we have HDR and TS threads...where is the one for bokeh?
