What is the best way to start a zoa tank? Should I buy a bunch of frags and let them grow on my LR or should I buy a couple of "colonies" and go from there?
The tank is a 10 gallon reef with 50 watts of PC

We bought a whole bunch of frags and let them grow from there. In time you will have lots of colonies. :) & Lots more color to play with...

Sorry! I had no idea where to put this thread
Besides that..
How many frags would be a good start for a 10 gallon?

Its all a preference. Do you want 5 large colonies or 10 small-medium colonies. Id shoot for having multiple variety and color and go with more is better. Remember some Zoas are faster growers than others and will be more dominant. Do your research

How long has the tank been running? Do you have any other corals already? I personally would start with one or two inexpensive frags to see how well they do in your tank before spending a lot of money on expensive polyps or colonies. The dome has a couple of zoa tanks and a small coral frag area with some individual polyps, mushrooms, ricordea and the like for 5-10 bucks. I'd start there or check out the store in San Marcos -- sometimes they have some polyps.

Does aanimal wonders always sell frags of zoas? Last time I went they didn't have anything and that was about a week ago.

Sometimes. I haven't been in for several months. Polly's Pets in New Braunfels usually, if not always, has some.
