What's this guy called. I thought it was a dwarf basselette or something like that but I can't find him on the net.

They are pretty cool. Reported to do better in small groups, ie not hide as much. I like the basslets, we used to have a lantern basslet- whose name was Fat B. As he tried to eat our tail spot. Karma paid off as he got the snot beat out of him later, probably by our rouge crab.

yep, chalks are great little fish. I've had mine for almost a year maybe longer and its one of my favorites.

I've been on the fence about getting one. I like them and they'd fit in so well! But I also love my little anemone shrimp and fully grown the basslets could eat them

It took awhile for him to come out, but he finally took possession of the devils hand. I guess it provides him a hide out and front seat visibility when it comes to feeding.

Doesn't like the pellets but he does eat the frozen stuff pretty good. So they are a schooling fish?

Europhyllia

shoaling I believe. hardly any are schooling

Yeah, Allan.... you need three!

And by the way, those deep red acans in the picture with him are gorgeous!

I call them Hobogato Reds.

When they are out to feed the white tentacles make them look like a starburst.

Oh, and I'm off to the dictionary to discover the difference between schooling and shoaling.

justahobby

IIRC schooling is when they travel in those massive tight groups (tuna) and shoaling is more like a community grouping hanging out (clown gobies)

Allan my Chalk is in the tank solo and is out all the time, not shy at all. Like any other fish, you never know the personality your fish is going to have untill you have it. I am thinking of adding a couple of more just to do so.

school- individuals similar in size that usually maintain an equal distance between each other and move synchonously with each other. group looks like a single large organism (example herrings); no hierarchy, members are equal

shoal- a group whose members do not stay an equal distance apart and do not engage in coordinated movements (example: anthias, chromis, etc.) They have a hierarchy but just like in school there is social attraction between the group members.

which differs from:

aggregation- an assemblage of fish that are brought together by an environmental stimulus, not by each other

lol, gotcha.

My chalk is out now. I was thinking of another so I could do away with the chromis.

Thanks Karin. Sweet basslet btw Allan. Where did you get it?

allan
Mon, 17th Jan 2011, 04:26 PM
I got it at AD. It didn't glow there though. I was happy when he started coming out of hiding... until then I thought it was a female.

justahobby
Mon, 17th Jan 2011, 05:45 PM
Why would that matter?

allan
Mon, 17th Jan 2011, 07:37 PM
It doesn't, I was funning the ladies. You know, fearful and hiding whereas the male would be... Ah, loses the fun part when explained. It was in poor taste anyway.

I would like to replace the chromis with these guys though.

Dang it, Type slower next time. I don't read very fast. Those jokes just go right over my head.

That would look a lot nicer/ unique to see a group of chalk basslets

Yeah we didn't get it because for most of us it works the other way around ;)

I think the punctuation may have thrown off the program... maybe you had a question mark after the word? For example:
b*****

justahobby
Tue, 18th Jan 2011, 12:04 PM
b*****

allan
Tue, 18th Jan 2011, 03:51 PM
b*****
cr*****
crass
pass
p*****
cl*****
class

allan

Yes. If you are going to use a bad word, use it with determination! :D
