well I've been in this site for about a year now and finally got my own tank set up. I have had a 10 gallon set up for about 6 months but was looking for something with a little more room. So now i have a 120 gallon tank i finished the stand earlier this week and just finished the plumbing today and filled it up. now just waiting for the cycle to begin.

Grats on your first build/ tank thread! Well, you won't be able to fit much more, but 110 extra gallons might work :P What kind of livestock do you have now, plan for in the future? Lighting, filtration?

right now i have a clown fish and a bicolor psuedo, I'll be using t5 lighting and adding led's in the future. i don't know what skimmer i got i bough it off my gf's nephew and he said it was the right size, he's had a couple of tanks like this so i trust him.

Wow, that is a sweet stand!!! Don't hesitate to ask us if you have any questions when setting up your equipment, etc. Will you be adding a sump (highly recommended)?

Oh, that will be a good sump. That was a sweet deal on it too. When you get ready for macro just post on here. There is usually at least one person looking to thin out their crop.

I just set up a 36 gallon bowfront and it cleared up this morning. I added the sand and water Wednesday night. I guess that is 36 hours? Good luck with your tank:)

thanks yea i just put the water in last night so i guess I'm still ok. dylan have you noticed any spike in your water parameters yet i used a live rock from my 10 gallon but i checked my water 2day and everything is good. my small tank cycled right away but this one hasn't shown anything yet?

I actually can't get live rock until tomorrow. I haven't tested my water. None of my tanks have went through an initial cycle yet, luckily. And I hope this one doesn't either. I'm supposed to get some live rock and I'll let you know:)

oh you've never had a tank go through an initial cycle how long did you wait b4 you started adding livestock then?

I try to wait a couple of weeks just in case it does go through one. If the tank doesn't go through a cycle, I think I am going to add a fish next weekend. Some people will disagree with this, but If the parameters are okay, then I see no reason to wait.

My tank never "cycled" however I never added any livestock until my nitrates started to register.
I would advise the same, and by no means should you introduce a selection of fish. One at a time, and start with friendly/hardy fish.
You should, IMO, get all of your intended LR (or most of it) before you contemplate your livestock. I didn't see any in your tank, although you may have gotten it in there already.
Not sure what others here think about the macro, but I would want to put it in as soon as I could, probably up to two or three weeks before I planned my first addition to the display tank. With the macro you will be getting a litany of other creatures (copapods, star fish, arthopods, and furry worms to mention a few) which will starve with no food being added to the tank. The macro itself will weather a few weeks, but the purpose of the green stuff is to export nutrients by periodic trimming of the growing mass.
Anyway, you can toss my name in as a willing sponsor to your macro needs down the road although someone else may be much closer.
Good luck to both of you, I remember when I started and find myself excited with your progression.

i started with a mixture of LR and i guess it would be cured rock. i am in no hurry to put livestock in the tank the first 2 fish going in there are the clown and psuedo in my 10 gallon and they are happy right there until everything is safe in this tank.

Sorry, school has been pretty crazy this semester i have not been able to get on for a while and update everything is going good all my chemical levels are where there suppose to be. I have a clown fish, 2 blue damsels, a psuedo, and a pajama cardinal. After i get my lighting set up a little better it will be time to add some coral. The only thing is i have this brownish red algae that wont go away and my turbos are having a hard time keeping up. Is there anything else that i can start doing to get this algae off?

Looks like diatoms, maybe? Perhaps you are getting that cycle after all. Circulation doesn't look like it is a problem. Lighting is adequate?

Same here. I syphoned as much as I could during water changes, but it mostly went away on its own.

The way I understand it, chemipure will get rid of the cyano but not the cause.

after reading more about chemiclean you are right it only does get rid of it. i just cant figure out whats causing it ????

How old are your bulbs? T5s tend to shift towards the red spectrum that the cyano likes fairly soon.
When I sold my (actually really high quality) T5 fixture and went to all LEDs the red slime disappeared within a week or two.
If the bulbs are older I bet replacing them will help. If your fixture isn't outfitted with fans, add some: overheating makes the bulbs age even faster

ok sorry about not updating sooner its been a rough couple of weeks. first i lost my clownfish which ive had for a year in a half already then the next day i lost my BTA to my powerhead so i took out the little livestock i had in the tank and completely tore the tank down. rearranged the rock and let it re cycle got everything back in now and just put in a cleaning crew to keep algae at bay. everything is looking good now and hopefully i can get some new pictures up soon.
