I am very interested in eventually getting a clam, heck maybe even two one day. But my question lies with my lighting. I am currently running a Coralife 36" High Output T5 Lunar Aqualight fixture. It has 4 High Output T5 Lamps and 2 Lunar Blue LEDs. I have been told by some that I can have clams, and some people have told me that I need MH for clams. So before I eventually pay the money for a clam I would like to know if it is possible to keep alive and growing in my tank first. So what do you guys think? Thanks....

Dustin I used to think only under Halides but surprisingly enough I've seen a Clam under MH, T5s, and EVEN UNDER PC'S !

I would say yes or no depending on the clam and placement in tank. Derasas for example don't need as much lighting.

I know it's time for bed because I read the title and thought "what on earth are you going to do with white lightening (moonshine) and clams"

I've had three clams under t5. I lost two of them. The one that is still going strong I had placed within inches of the surface.

That, and I had ten t5 bulbs stuffed in a canopy that was 3 x 4 feet.

ok it depends on age of clams, small clams under 3-4 inches still require supplemental feeding, after they mature no feeding is required and they pretty much live off "solar" power and of course suck up calcium. I have a 6 inch maxima and it started out under MH. about a month ago I transferred it to my new tank with a 6 bulb t5 and it's placed on bottom and it's doing fine.

True.

Not sure what I had, or still have. I got this guy from Kevin about a year ago. It gets whatever it gets from the lights and whatever is in the water column.

The other two I got from the LFS and were definitely under three inches.

BLUF, IMO I would try to get one from a member who wants to get rid of theirs as your first attempt for the reasons Chris mentions above.

Thanks for the replies guys... Yeah, I was told that there are mainly 3 types of Claims and it all differs with those three types. Just not sure as to what type.. LoL
