I want a tank of the month contest.
how come we don't have one?
If funds allow it we could even have plaques made for this :)

Yep, we used to have one. I even won it once, lol. (My 24 gallon NC!)

If I remember correctly, we didn't seem to have enough people participating to keep it going.

I'd love to see it brought back.

Christopher :)

Wait a min. I thought maast did have a TOTM as well

Aww man I hope that this year we Maastards can show some participation and maybe have this contest brought back !

I'm glad you mentioned this Karin all this time I thought there was and just hadn't seen it yet.

I know there's some SICK Tanks out there :-)

Participation will be easy.
Rather than wait for volunteers we'll just nominate other people's tanks. :D
Who could decline being nominated? ;)

Europhyllia

We can either find pics
or just nominate the person/tank and then they have to provide info/pics

Maybe that will also get people to get to post more threads about their tanks :)

Oh and if you need a volunteer to coordinate it, I'd love to :D

I voted for TOTQ, we should at least be able to get nominees for that....

We actually had TOTM and TOTY....I'd like to see something brought back as well.

TOTQ might be a good place to start as Erik suggested.

Mike (TexReefer) won the last TOTY and sponsors donated over $1000 in prizes/GC for the winner....was pretty cool.

yikes. I can see how that might be intimidating for people. lol

I'd actually love to see something on a smaller scale to give lots of people a chance at it! 13 small winners over 5 big ones so even people with 'just great' (versus super spectacular) tanks can hope to win. :)

I guess we should wait and see what the BOD thinks about this :)

and bringing it up again: is there an archive to view previous winners?

I'd help you Karin.

I think we are trying to do one, but not sure what format.

I liked how the process worked when I got mine (a different club). They had someone coordinate it, and it is a lot of work for them. The nominees are supposed to fill out a form that explains their setup, then someone from the club goes and does a photoshoot, then they make a beautiful presentation about the tank from all the information they gathered. But, it's hard to get the nominees to fill out a form and get everyone coordinated (someone else had to step in and help the person in charge to bring it to closure). I think the form was helpful because it helped the person responsible to know what questions to ask or what to focus on in the photoshoot. They used to do the presentation as part of each monthly meeting, not sure if they still do. But it was a great way for people to learn about different tanks, ask questions, and get to know you better. Everyone remembers the Bluespot lady! Haha! I don't think the membership votes, but there is a committee that selects them. So, the first time the membership sees the tank is when it is presented, which is nice.

It was setup similar here on MAAST except that nominees took their own pictures. Kind of stunk for those of us that had lower quality cameras but other than that it worked out just fine IMO.

Okay - you do it then Lorraine. :) It's getting too complicated for me
I just want to see it get done.

I envisioned this all a lot lower key! The more I learn about how these things are run the more overwhelmed I feel myself. lol

Really my only goals are:
getting to see some tanks we haven't seen
having fun
getting other people to have more fun and participating more

Wow, I'm jealous, but I think I would rather spread it out to more members. I certainly wouldn't want to be responsible for pics with my camera either! Based on what I saw at the tour, there are lots of nice tanks out there and lots of good photographers in the club. And, I don't think it has to be about a tank that is all decked out either. Just a good example of that type of tank.

I don't mind taking on whatever the board decides, as long as Karin is helping :)

As Lorraine mentioned, we have had a few in-depth behind the scenes discussions in the Meeting Committee about resurrecting this concept, with some new tweaks and changes (which Mike is telling me would be more like "reincarnation" than "resurrection" over here!) It was on my list for our first BOD meeting later this month. Glad to have such competent volunteers to take the project and run with it! Let's get this approved and get it going!

(Pssst.... Karin, you are on the Meetings Committee now.... have you read the thread "Future Meetings for 2011" in which these ideas were discussed?) :)

How the HECK does Jack remember this stuff? Seriously!

Anyway, I think it's time for us to resurrect the TANK OTM/TANK OTY contest too.

Well, to make it all kosher, we should probably get BOD approval (shouldn't be too difficult!) and then set up a committee to:
-define the parameters / rules of the program
-make the announcement on MAAST
-start doing the work!

I would think Lorraine, Karin, plus one to two more committee volunteers, maybe more if more people offered. Lorraine, why don't you bring an informal proposal to the January BOD meeting, including the list of committee members and a sketch of how you would see it operating? We could set a time and day for a meeting in the chatroom for input on the parameters/rules or we could just run with what has been thrown out here and in the other Meetings forum thread.

No you guys didn't let me until recently. I'll read it now :)

Sure, I could take a stab at it for the BOD mtg. Don't know if I remember everywhere that posts were made on this, but I think I remember the overall discussions.

Photographers and an equipment techno geek to help with that goes over my head would be useful. Karin I know you got some of this covered.

Maybe Rick will volunteer. Or Erik. Or I bet we could get Corydude, who has been offering to help with the meetings committee and he has some great photo skills.

Honestly, I would consider the "professional" photo shots of my tank to be more of a prize than a plaque any day!

Lorraine, the other thread where we were kicking this around is in the meetings forum under "Future Meetings for 2011."

I remember that very long thread. Just verified that this item is on the Jan mtg agenda already.

For now, I will get going on drafting out some details. I know you and Karin have a hook we can use to lure in the volunteers for the help we will need later. I agree with you on the photos, great shots are priceless! But I love my plaque too.

Thanks for the shoutout Kristy! Yes, I've been offering to help out Maast for 3 years now and no one's taken the bait.

This is a great idea Karin, and I'm glad you brought it up. If I can help out with pics or whatever else, I'm available.

Scream - great! I've got a draft form started that would identify everything we would need to know about. I'm thinking folks would have an opp to draft out their answers on their own in advance of an interview and then the interviewer could help get any clarification needed. I couldn't have possibly thought of everything I needed to tell them if I didn't have the form mostly completed before they talked with me. I would have had a lot of I don't know answers :) which would have been embarrassing.

CoryDude - cool!

Looks like we a good group of volunteers to get this off the ground! We can add in others on an as needed basis.
