i've had this kenya tree in my 40 gal tank for about a three months now. At first it was usually always open and looked really good. but for the past month it has been shrivled up. what are some factors that could be wrong? Is there anything that should be added as a substitute for some kind of nutrition it is not getting?

Kenyas grow like weeds, and don't usually need any extra additives in an established tank. Softies benefit from iodide, but it looks like your tank isn't populated enough to need anything in addition to what is in the salt.
How long has the tank been set up? What kind of lights do you have? What are the parameters?
Have you made any changes?

If it's not happy, it will shed branches. Wherever a branch lands a new tree will grow. I thought that was really cool at first, but be careful for what you wish for.
Mine shrivel up like that frequently. Sometimes for days at a time. If I put my hand in the tank, they shrivel. If I change the water flow in any way, they shrivel. Always come right back though.

If it stays closed up like that, try experimenting with a change in the flow it is getting, either by moving it's position in the rank or adjusting the water flow in the tank.

The tank has been up for about 6 months now, and i am running a metal halide w/ the blue lights as well. The only changes that have been made have been regular water changes monthly.
i will try changing the water flow. It has shed branches in the past but has not spread for a couple of months now.

Kenya doesn't require very high lighting, try placing it in a somewhat shaded area with a gentle flow.
