Hey!

I've just ordered my clowns (Black Ice Semi Snowflake) and I was wondering who else has unique clowns. I know that Rick has a naked clown, and recently saw a pair of Onyx on their way out, anyone else?

I'm actually more excited for my pair of clowns to come in than I've been for anything in my aquarium yet... Thanks to Gabe for sourcing them!!

So show em!

I have a picasso that I was going to try and pair up with one of GC's Onyx, but the Onyx was behaving oddly and I found him yesterday upside down being devoured by snails.

Gorgeous fish though, wonder what they will look like when they come in.

Gabe has a pair of semi-picasso clowns in stock at the moment, they're also pretty bad-*** (ORA) and may be a good replacement to console you ;)

I'm big into clowns and like you they have been my most prized possession....take it all just don't touch my clowns.

My current pair I have had for over a year and they came from GCReef, their first clutch of Onyx Clowns. They are still coloring up with black.

I just love the name, the sweet smile and those great big eyes on the Yellow Belly. But no more clowns for me. Saving up for a bigger seahorse tank -maybe ;)

I thought the difference was Picassos are percula and Snowflake are occelaris. I remember the first Picasso that thing was amazing! I wish the offspring came out like that. I just have regular Percula so it's not too exciting but used to have black and white occelaris.

Not a big fan of the new platinums or the albinos.

A few years back I had a friend who used to breed clowns and sell them to Texas Tropical and a shop called Aquarium sales and service. He used to get no stripe and misbar individuals all the time but would cull them or give them to me for my marine science lab, because the shops didn't want them. Funny how they are fetching such high prices for these mutant strain now. Has anyone on the site who breeds clown seen any strange mutations in their broods?? If so Hold on to them they may be the next big thing!!

As a FYI these are not mutations. They are the product of genetic engineering.Mendel did it almost a century before and many scientist after with D. melanogaster.

As far A.ocellaris being a "snow" and A.percula being a "picasso" is a line in the sand.

It seems like they started out as natural variations, then were selectively bred to bring out those traits. Not exactly mutation or genetic engineering. I think hobbyists might have the same thing in mind, whichever label they apply. Semantics.

We didn't "genetically engineer" all the different breeds of dogs, but they aren't mutations either. Look at all the varieties of fancy goldfish, then look at the original carp. That's not exactly natural, but I doubt recombinant DNA was ever toyed with in a lab. But, then look at the Glo Fish. Now that's a mutation. (IMO. I'm no scientist. Oh, and I'm supposed to have that little 'Registered' symbol next to the Glo name.)

Lol, I don't believe that selective breeding is anything new, and for all intents and purposes could be classed as genetic engineering, but traditionally 'engineering' genetics is though of as inserting specific genes into animals to produce new animals, the glo fish being a perfect example.

Genetic Engineering == Selective Breeding in your mind?

That's what I thought too. Genetic engineering just sounds like a very modern term for an old fashioned technique. Mendell didn't have the technology the Glo Fish folks have, so I would call Mendel's technique selective breeding, and the Glo fish thing genetic engineering.

Great pictures guys, my wife wants a pair of grade a picasso's when i can find one cheap. As far as selective breeding fish being a bad thing, think about it we would not have all the different breeds of dogs today if someone would not of selectively bred dogs years ago.

I understand that they are now being bred to retain these new characteristics, but they start off as a variation from the natural characteristic phenotype which in essence is a mutation. That variation is then bred into other fish and the trait is carried on from line to line and may soon be expressed very differently in future offspring. This may be a result of hybridization between lines in wild populations. Also the reason many geneticists us fruit flies is because of the frequency of mutations that can be observed in short periods of time.
