View Full Version : Question for the eel lovers out there

I'm in the process of planning a 75-gal predator tank, and I would really like to have a moray eel included in the stock list. My three front-runners, in order of preference: a jeweled moray (Muraena lentiginosa), a golden-tailed moray (Gymnothorax miliaris) or the omnipresent snowflake eel (Echidna nebulosa). My question is, what are some good tankmates to go with an eel? I'd like to have a lionfish and a trigger of some sort. If I get the sizes balanced out so that the eel shouldn't(?) eat the fish and vice versa, will this list work? What are some other options that people have tried? I'm aware of the inherent risk of combining fish with an eel, especially the jeweled and golden-tail, but I'd like to hear the experiences of those who've tried this before.
PS - Anybody else been to RCA recently and realized that the green moray in the display tank by the front door ate the 9" Desjardin tang the other day?!?!?

with any of the morays (except zebras and snowflakes), there is a risk of the eel eventually breaking the spines off of a lionfish and then eating it. also, trigger fish are a bad idea with lions as they will usually pick at the slow moving lion's fins.

I second hobogato. Triggers are a bad tankmate for lions. plus because eels have bad eye sight there is a chance of the eel thinking the lion is food and attacking it possibly being stung and killed

Maybe I can shed some light of the livestock I have with my eels. I LOVE the eels I have and I am very fond of them. I have a total of 3. In one tank I have a chainlink eel with a dwarf lionfish, starry blenny, and a copperband butterfly. I have had the eel and lionfish together since around April with never any issues. In my other tank I have a ghost ribbon eel and a snowflake eel. The ghost eel is very personable and always out and about. These guys can be really hard to get to eat, but if you are able to you will be successful with it. Mine is always hungry. The snowflake eel is the most aggressive and always tries to steal food but none-the-less gets along with the ghost eel. My snowflake tends to hide all the time. In this tank I have a frogfish angler, dwarf hawkfish, bi-color bleeny, flounder, 2 clown gobies, and a marroon clownfish.

This was the angler when I first got him...

He has since morphed into a pale pink color

He really blends in a lot more with the color of the corals and coraline algae...I liked the bright orangle look, but I knew it wouldnt last. I had another angler (before I scewed up and over fed him, which resulted in his death). He went from a bright yellow to more of the color of the rockwork...I love these fish!
