Thought I would share our progress with feeding Mike's new antennata lionfish. (As usual, please overlook that this photo is from my phone and under actinic lights only)...

We got this handsome guy Wednesday night at Gabe's sale and watched him eat a small live fish in the store. Friday evening we offered him a small netful of live ghost shrimp mixed with some of what we were feeding the rest of the tank. He ate FIVE ghost shrimp and TWO bites of PE mysis off the sand.

Last night he ate three more ghost shrimp but did not seem to nibble on any of the frozen. But today he got very interested when I fed the FOWLR this morning, so I decided to try some of the Reef Nutrition Mysis Feast. We had great luck with this product recently and were able to get our anorexic long-nosed hawkfish eating like a champ by starting him on Mysis Feast and then mixing it in with other frozen.

I don't know what goes in that bottle (besides just plain refrigerated PE Mysis) but it must smell delicious to fish. This guy got very excited about eating and started stalking the Mysis. When he is stalking his prey his fins open up and start waving and he does this tail shake that is exactly like our cats before they pounce on "prey." He only ate a little, but the interest was really evident. Rather than just watching the bottom of the tank for interesting stuff to eat, he had this lightbulb-flickering moment and started looking for food from above, then stalking the food floating at the top. It was really cool to see.

So, we are really hoping that this signifies the beginning of an important transition for this guy. We would rather not feed him live shrimp forever (but would do it if we had to, of course) so it is awesome to see him transitioning to prepared foods.

I highly recommend the Reef Nutrition Mysis Feast if you have a fish that won't eat. Our copperband butterfly also gobbled it up the first day of being added to the tank. This is still a new product, just introduced into the market in October when Randy came for L*MAR, so I'm not sure who else carries it, but we got ours from Jason at Aquarium Design. Check it out!

Glad he is doing so well.

Where did you get the ghost shrimp? are they freshwater or saltwater host shrimp?

The ghost shrimp are freshwater and from Texas Tropical. We still have a few. A couple of them perished but Mike's triggerfish didn't seem to care! We've also gotten the saltwater kind from Aquarium Designs but they were out that day that we bought them.
