Would you rather buy a colony and spend more money or would you rather buy nice frags for less money and let them grow out?

I'd rather have the money to buy whatever I want. lol
In real life though I rarely spend more than 50 bucks (mostly less) on a coral so if it buys me colony good, otherwise (like with Acans) a frag is fine

I have done very well with frags from Gabes, GC REEF, Eric, and BSJF.
Polly's has a nice frag of Joes Coral that I want real bad also.

So far, it looks like everyone's on the same page. I'm not saying I'd pass on a nice colony, but overall, I'd be more likely to spend more money on nice frags. I'd rather spend $50 on three really nice frags instead of $50 on a single nice colony. If that nice colony doesn't do well, you're $50. If one of the frags doesn't do well, you're not out near as much.

I agree I would rather spend 50 on 3 nice frags then on one thing. I like variety. I feel I get my moneys worth

I voted frags because I have bought colonies before and they always look out of place. I like to buy frags because they will encrust the rock i already have in my tank.

The reason for my "frag" vote...
Anyone can plant a coral reef, it takes a special person to grow a coral reef.
Christopher :)
P.S. It is a semi quote, from whom I don't remember.

Oh I bet a colony would be just as easy to kill as a frag, Christopher ;)
What's a colony anyway?
Most of the corals I am interested in would be several meters as colonies. So at what point is the difference between a frag and a colony?
I also think smaller tanks look nicer with tiny frags than bigger tanks especially when it's just a hodge podge of stuff

I think if it fits on a small frag plug and is not taller than 2-3" (acros, etc.) than it's a frag. Anything other than that is a colony. Albeit a small one. At least that's what I think.

I think a frag is just a fragment of a larger coral. Colonies would be multiple branches, polyps, heads, mouths etc all working together as one unit or happy little family. lol
there are small frags, large frags and small and large colonies.

Wher can you get 3 frags for 50$ ?

Lots of places, just not here in town. I went up to Austin this past weekend and stopped by River City Aquatics. They had a $10 coral section, $15 dollar coral section and a $20 coral section. mrcoral.com also has a $10 frag section with some nice stuff. Overall I had a good experience with him but I've read horror stories from other people so tread lightly.
ALSO! Part of the reason why I made this poll is to see about changing that. Maybe one of our sponsors is watching this poll and might start offering some $10-$15 frags. You never know.... :hypnotyized:

I voted for colonies because its easier to see where they are. Can't tell you how many times I have spent a couple hundred bucks only to have the frags start disappearing. Eventually when I made large purchases I started to mark the tank with the general area of what frags where were to keep track.

Oh Erik, I lost a bunch of frags in the rock work as well.
That's why I love gorgonians so much. It's tough to lose an even relatively small gorgonian :)

I like frags because you can watch them grow.

I prefer colonies...but buying frags make's it affordable. That is the only reason I voted for frags, it's the only way I can get the good stuff!!!

I have bought a couple of colonies and was very happy with them but I still prefer frags because they are more affordable and you can watch them grow up

rainbow anything quickly becomes out of my price range once it has more than two heads or mouths lol!

I picked colonies because I thought it said cheap frags instead of cheap nice frags. I would rather grow out my coral than buy colonies if they are the same type of coral.

I thought the same thing when I first read it. If it was cheap frags over nice colonies I would have picked colonies.
