Can anyone tell me what this is and how to get rid of it.

Looks like some sort of pest anemone? I'm not sure what it is. You can inject it with many of the pest anemone killers on the market(or a DIY pest killer like lemon juice and boiling water), and/or you can take the rock out and use a flamethrower!!!

Looks like a type of Majano to me.

I would have guessed majano too. The aiptasia stuff on the market doesn't work on them. Inject the ones you can with boiling water, but more will crop up in a hurry so you have to stay on top of it. Reducing the nutrient level in the tank slows the spread. They can become a nuisance, overtaking a whole tank and crowding out more desirable corals.

Pull the rock out of the tank, have the water hot and ready. Inject each one at the base with enough water to make it swell. Move quick; the water cools fast and they don't seem to mind warm fresh water injections so much. Once injected, let them sit and stew for a few minutes. Get a cheap dental scrape kit at walmart, use the flat pic to scrape off the majano. They really are like miniature anemones; the foot will peal right off the rock. If it doesn't peal off easy, it didn't get injected well enough and you might as well wait and try again next round.

Try to get it in check before they start crawling around. When they get too crowded on one rock, they will actually move like regular anemones to get to a better spot. I was told they wouldn't crawl across sand and they could be isolated on an island. I found out that is not the case. They just move a little slower across the sand. Resilient little things.

Majano was my first guess too. A friend of mine in Austin is battling them. He tried injecting, with no positive effects. Now he just pulls the affected rock, dries it and freezes it, then returns it to the tank after a few weeks. It there's a coral on the rock, he'll break the rock apart to remove the infected pieces. But, his system is large enough to handle this kind of process. May not work so well biologically speaking with a smaller tank.

I am starting to have majanos sprout up here and there in my tank as well. I injected them with boiling hot water and they were back to normal within an hour. Whatever works, please post it back in this thread so I can try it.

Boiling water itself didn't get rid of them. It just stressed them enough to be able to peel the foot off the rock.

i just took the rocks out and chiseled the infected part making sure to take all the tissue off. hopefully they wont come back.
