Tonight starts my adventure back in the smaller side of things. Order was placed tonight. Everything should be here next week! Pics to come. Eddie at Cadlights has been great to work with so far, answered a ton of questions and worked with me on what all I wanted. I didn't get the light, I have different plans for that. http://www.cadlights.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=41&products_id=175

Before I bought the Finnex I was seriously looking into a CAD tank. The 22g nano. I went with the Finnex because of the size advantage. I wish they had these options and tanks when I was looking last year because I would have got the one you bought. Very nice tank.

It really is, I was looking at custom building a set up very similar to this and I was quoted a little over what I got the tank, stand, sump, skimmer, fuge light, return pump, light trees just for the tank. When I ran across this, I had to jump on it.

Came to about $1k shipped for everything. $599 gets you the Tank, sump, skimmer, return, fuge light, plumbing, fan. Still, it's a fantastic deal. I'll post detailed pics once everything comes in. I've seen pics on RC and the quality looks good.

Teeb are you going with the 24 or 36 DIY kit.

The last week or so ive been really reading about the LEDs on threads here and on RC and finally understand what everyone has been talking about.

Teeb
Fri, 22nd Oct 2010, 04:51 PM
I don't care for the kits. I want to play around with the colors some and don't know if I just want RB and CW. I'm thinking about using the warm or neutral whites to help out with the red/orange spectrum that most LED's are lacking, or maybe a single red. I'll probably piece it together for now. I'm going to get heat sinks for 36, but plan on starting with 24 spread across 2 pendants to see if that will be enough. I just read through an LED build on RC and the guy was using RB/CW/Red and had 23 LED's over a 20g tank. It was bright and his SPS had great color. I really liked his setup and may try to go with something like that. I also want to see Steven or Patrick's setup with their AI's and see how I like the CB/CW/RB.

Well....1 week later and still no tank. I don't think it has even shipped yet, not how I was hoping to start out.

Fri, 29th Oct 2010, 08:26 AM
I think the NW will really help out with the color in reds. That has been the biggest complaint that I've read. Did you buy the pre-drilled heatsink? Or are you going to paste the LEDs to the heatsink? I'm thinking about buying some heatsinks and drilling them to accomodate the LEDs, that way I can switch out any LEDs if necessary.

StevenSeas
Fri, 29th Oct 2010, 12:09 PM
if you drill your heatsink you will still want some sort of thermal conductor between the star and the heatsink. There will be micro air gaps because both surfaces are perfectly smooth so you dont get as good of heat transfer, though it is still fairly good.

Here's the preliminary layout for the LED pendants.. Anyone with LED experience care to chime in. I'm getting the 18 led heatsink, but will be starting with only 12, so the 6 on the outer edge will not be used at this time. I plan on using 60 degree lenses.

Good deal, looks like your white to blue ratio is just about perfect.

Teeb
Fri, 29th Oct 2010, 10:38 PM
I am a little worried that there will be too much white. I liked the idea of 2/1 ratio of blue/white, so I was a little concerned about the 7/5.

txg8gxp
Fri, 29th Oct 2010, 11:06 PM
I'm unsure of the lumens output on the warm white's, so I'm not sure. What mah do you plan to run for the different colors?

Teeb
Sat, 30th Oct 2010, 07:54 AM
The warm white (3000 K) XLamp XP-G provides up to 114 lumens and 109 lumens per watt at 350 mA. Driven at 1.0 A, the XP-G warm-white produces up to 285 lumens at 84 lumens per watt, which is four times the light output than the highest available XLamp XR-E warm-white LED at equal efficacy.

The neutral-white (4000 K) XLamp XP-G provides up to 139 lumens and 132 lumens per watt at 350 mA. Driven at 1.5 A, the XP-G neutral-white produces up to 463 lumens, which is four times the light output of the XLamp XR-E cool-white LED at equal efficacy.

It looks like NW's are the way to go. I don't completely understand how you can control the amperage to the LED's, would this be adjustable within the driver? I've been meaning to ask you about that. I would imagine that driving them closer to the 1a would decrease life and increase heat, correct?

The control over the amperage depends on what kind of driver you are using, some are constant current so you select what current you are going to be running when you buy it. these are typically 350ma 500ma 700ma and 1000ma. Others are adjustable or "dimmable" and are able to vary the amperage. This is through use of an EXTERNAL pot. Make sure it is external because some that say they have them are internal and thats not typically what your looking for because you cant adjust it at whim.

And yes driving them closer to 1a or 1000ma does decrease life some but really its more understanding that its due to the heat the builds up because it does increase heat the more ma you run through it. Also the output over 700ma to 1000ma is really not all that much but its there and kinda cool to be able to go all the way just make sure you can cool it.

txg8gxp
Sat, 30th Oct 2010, 08:57 AM
amperage always equals heat. Nothing to worry about though, the xp series can handle it no problem. The xp cool white's can be safely ran up to 1.5A. The higher amperage would only decrease life span if the emitter ran closer to there "thermal overload" range, as long as you have a way to dissipate the heat and keep them at a safe temp you will be fine. "How do you control the amperage?" This is done with different series drivers. 500mah, 700mah, 1000mah, etc. This could be done by running different amperage meanwells on different color emitters or by running dimmable drivers. Dimmable drivers would allow you to vary the input amperage, and this will also allow you to adjust the overall K rating if you keep the white and blue emitters on different drivers. To keep the setup simple, you don't have to have all emitters on dimmable drivers to adjust K rating but if you want to add a controller to dim all the emitter for dawn/dusk then they will all need to be ran with eln-60-48d. Just remember that the eln-60-48d's require a variable 1-10v input to control the dimming feature. This can be done with diy voltage regulators or by using the RK ALC module. FYI any voltage over 10v will damabe the dimming circuit, and anything below 1v will default to 100% output.

This is true on XR series emitters, but not XP. XR's have a max input of 1A but XP's have a max input of 1.5A

Tank arrived today! Just an initial impression:

Pros:

Tank - glass lines up perfectly, great silicone work, mitered edges, glass is very clear, trapezoid overflow is cool.
Sump - great dimensions for the tank, styro bottom is a nice touch, baffles all perfectly aligned, not tempered
Skimmer - build quality and fit is good, won't really know much more until it's plugged in
Return Pump - Sicce PSK-2500 is awesome. $100 return pump in a $1k package

Cons:
Stand - Wow, I don't even know where to begin, it's utter crap. I would expect better quality from walmart.
Plumbing - See pic below.....just no is all I can say

Some teaser pics:

Smooth, clean joints

Trap overflow is really nice, however I think I'll have a lid made for it.

http://i730.photobucket.com/albums/ww304/davisfamily2009/aquarium/CADlights%2040g%20Artisan/_DSC0208.jpg

http://i730.photobucket.com/albums/ww304/davisfamily2009/aquarium/CADlights%2040g%20Artisan/_DSC0213.jpg

Lols, it looks like wood looking wrapping paper. Doors finally sitting flush. After having the stand for awhile, it's ok.

http://i730.photobucket.com/albums/ww304/davisfamily2009/aquarium/CADlights%2040g%20Artisan/_DSC0214.jpg

 The plumbing is a total joke. It looks like it came from scraps. I will not be using any of the plumbing. The 6" tall durso cracks me up. Nothing like the sound of water falling 10" in your overflow. It doesn't really come with bulkheads, just 2 pieces of PVC that screw together with some rubber grommets. I was very surprised to see this.

Well, the stand came with NO INSTRUCTIONS! The holes were at least predrilled so I couldn't have screwed anything up. I'm going to call Eddie tomorrow and see if we work something out. I'm sure he could send me a new door, but in all honesty, I don't want nor will use the stand. If I have to eat the $200, so be it, but it was wobbly with the empty tank on it. I'm **** sure not going to put triple the weight on it.

I am sorry to hear about the quality of the stand and plumbing. It will definitely sway my decision as to what I buy from them in the future. I am really eyeballing that 50g cube.

I would definitely buy the setup again, it's a great deal, I'm overall very happy. You'll have to make your own judgment on the stand. A buddy of mine saw it and thought it wasn't bad. I'm still not impressed, however after tightening it down, it's solid enough. My biggest complaint is with the veneer. It looks nice from a distance, but up close it's so so. I sat on it tonight and for those that have met me, I'm not light. The tank will have to have the holes drilled out some to accommodate standard bulkheads. While it's not quite as plug and play as I would have hoped, I still think it's definitely worth the price. Everything minus the stand/plumbing is very well built.

Loving it Teeb. I am also downgrading (to a 25 gallon) and hopefully I can get it up and running before the end of the year. Building a stand for it now, already made the tank and am just waiting for a couple of bulkheads.

I really like the minimalistic approach you took as well. That is what I will be doing with my nano, well attempt to do :)

Well, I finally have the correct bulkhead/holesaw combo so tank is getting drilled this weekend. Rock was puttied into place and the heater arrived today. Now just to find some sand and get it full of water.

On the downside, I'm very disappointed in Cadlights and their after sales support. I ordered my tank on Oct 20, it's Jan 4 today and I still do not have a complete stand nor does Eddie seem to care. I've emailed multiple time with pictures of what is going on and I keep getting blown off. I guess I just threw $200 down the hole on their stand and will have to run it without doors until I have one custom made. http://www.nano-reef.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/mad.gif

Well, 5 months after ordering the tank, it finally has water in it. Plumbing was completed and currently running a FW test. The video sucks, it's a cell phone vid. It sounds like you're at the base of a water fall, but in person, it's really quiet. Just need a little more RODI and hopefully have SW/sand/rock in it this week. Now, I just need to plan out all my wiring so it stays hidden.

I've been looking into them and it looks like they've been producing lights for hydroponics use for awhile. The only reviews I've found are from people using them to grow pot. They seem to be happy, although that may be due to other reasons. They manufacture their own leds, so short of swapping out color temps, they seem to know what they're doing. I'm pretty those plus these.....

I'm not even taking it out of the box until it's ready to go. and it's not coming close to the rock walls. Now if someone would start carrying the Sunbright Slimline fixtures, this would move a whole lot faster.

Updated pic..still really cloudy, but seems to be getting a little clearer every day. I just put some filter pad in today to help clear some of it up. Temporary T5's on it for light right now, LED's should be here next week. I'm really impressed with the MP10, so much better than the Koralia's. The pics shows the wave it makes, a little over 1/2" right now. Hopefully the cycle will be done shortly.

LED's are in, ignore the tank being filthy. I had a little to much kalk in the reactor and it dumped to much in, creating a film on most of the glass.

Here's a few more pics.

I picked up this little ottoman cheap and it houses all of my electrical spaghetti. It keeps it out of sight and up off the floor if anything happens. I do have the SL1 mounted behind the stand to help keep the wire runs down. I need to get everything cleaned up and mount the vortech driver, just havent messed with it yet. I'm also debating mounting the RKL head unit in there, but I like being able to see everything from in the stand. I ordered a fan kit for the cabinet, with the doors closed, my temps were still at 80 and I designed for this to be as low heat as possible. With the doors open, it'll get down to 76-77 with no problem.

Skimmer seems to be working great. It put out a TON of microbubbles for the first couple of days, but other that, I'm really happy with it.

My first few corals went in. A couple of Magician and a Monster Lips Paly, the blue LED's really help with color.

Thanks all. The ottoman doesn't get very warm. I'm also in there screwing around all the time. If it does start to heat up, I'll rig a small fan in there.

Small update...

I was getting some waterfall noise from the overflow, so I decided to use a little sponge to help stop it. A couple of dabs of superglue holds it in place and can be pulled off with little effort. I plan on changing them when I do water changes.

http://i730.photobucket.com/albums/ww304/davisfamily2009/aquarium/CADlights%2040g%20Artisan/_DSC0001.jpg

I added this little guy to keep the clown and Yasha company.

http://i730.photobucket.com/albums/ww304/davisfamily2009/aquarium/CADlights%2040g%20Artisan/DSC_0013.jpg

And a FTS...

The anodizing on the fixtues has worn off pretty bad, I need to have the front bracket cut above the water line and use a little black silicone to coat it. That should prevent any other problems.

The Yasha has finally become comfortable enough to stay out for most of the day.

It's hard to tell from the pic, but the Magicians have sprouted another head.

Added an AI Nano Sol to the center sump section along with a small frag rack. I'm picking up a Koralia Nano for it tomorrow. This should help clear out the display, it will be nice to see the sand bed again.
