Hey yall. It's been a while since I've been on here, so I kinda feel "out of the loop." But I am starting to have an aiptasia problem, and wanted to see if there have been any relatively recent developments on the subject. So, my buddy broke down his tank, and gave me some nice pieces. I knew the zoanthid rocks had a few on them, but I took them anyway--I hated to see them get trashed. Now I have them slowly starting to spread all over my tank, which I knew would happen. I bought some Aiptasia-X as soon as I got the infested rocks, and dosed accordingly several times. They would appear to be gone, but within a week's time, they would start to open back up. By two weeks' time, all of the polyps would be back out. So I started leaving my pumps and such off for about 2 hours after application of Aiptasia-X hoping that longer=better. But they still came back after about a week or 2. So, has anyone had success with this chemical? And if so, what are the tricks to getting it to work? I made sure to adequately apply it to the disk of each anemone, and left the flow off for plenty of time, in my opinion.
If this seems to be the general trend for others who have used this chemical, then what else should I try? I have tried peppermint shrimp, knowing that they probably wouldn't be very effective, but hoping for some level of control, but my flame hawk kept killing them, which I also figured would probably happen. Therefore, I mostly have LPS and a few softies in my tank, with an orange monti plate and a staghorn colony, because they are apparently troopers compared to the other SPS I have tried. If it helps, I have a 55 gal tank with a semi-deep sand bed. I have good luck with LPS and shrooms and any color of ricordea but the green ones. SPS and zoanthids usually don't make it in my tank, so I felt ethically bound to quit trying them until I get a better system set up. I have a big cannister filter, a 150 gal Coral Life HOB skimmer, 2-150W K2 Vipers, and a 48" HO T5 with actinics, as well as 2 Koralia powerheads. I also have two fish, and Bangai cardinal and a flame hawk. I know that these specs don't necessarily have anything to do with the aiptasia problem, but here they are, just in case they effect your recommended treatments. Thanks!
