i just bought 2 acans from Gabes today and i am having a hard time finding a good location for them. i know they dont like a lot of direct light or high flow so i put them on my sand bed. will they grow better on rocks? and what is "to much flow"?

i have a 150w mh if that helps

If they're swelling up and not being beaten by current you should be fine for flow.

I would start low, especially under MHs, as long as you don't have a goby that will drop sand on it. Off to the side so they're not in direct light.

When it's tentacles are extended squirt some food onto it. It's not necessary but they will love you for it.

I use a turkey Baster. Gentle squirt. I do it two to three times a week or if I see them looking for food when I feed the fish ONLY when the fish are preoccupied. I've heard instances where fish start nipping at lps after picking food from the lps.

I usually target mysis, but they'll eat just about anything. Including the squid my fish wouldn't eat, so they got a lot of that until it ran out.

If you want to see some great growth, try the Fauna Marin LPS pellets. They've been great for my recovering corals.

Allan gave some good information for you. I have some rainbow acans that I have moved fairly high in my 30g cube (about 10" under t-5) and they seem to be coloring up very well. I also have several colonies spread out over the sand bed and on rocks. When I put a new frag in the tank I start low and move it around to find it's happy spot. Some like more light and some do well with more flow, as long a they are puffed up and holding color where they are it should ok. As for feeding I feed mine mysis or a 50/50 mix (Ocean Nutrition - blood worm and brine) once or twice a week the day before a water change so I don't leave leftovers to junk up the water quality. I use a turkey baster or a 50cc syringe with O2 tubing on the end of it for more precise placement.

It's what we are here for. All of us had to learn somewhere and somehow.

Too much flow = closed up tight / flesh peeling off exposing skeleton (it does happen!)

if you want them to grow, glue them or wedge them onto a dead coral skeleton. preferably the calcified skeleton of another calcium consuming coral like an open brain. some plugs are made of that same material and they will grow fast on those also. they do not grow very fast on rocks. that and spot feed them and dose calcium. find the good location in the tank and do those 3 things and your acans will produce like 6 babies in a month or 2
