Noticed this night before last. last night it was slightly larger.
Nothing has changed in the tank other than an anemone did wander by this colony a couple days ago.
Not sure if I should wait and see if it recedes more or start fragging.

Crumby pics bit its the colony in the center. There is white around the base and on a few branches.

Start fragging.

Check your levels and run some carbon just to be safe.

You run GFO? Has the flow pattern changed?

Mr Cob

Dang it...I have gone through this a couple of times and never had much luck with stopping it. Best option is to cut the frags well away from the dead parts and hope it does not continue throughout the frags.

It has only happened to my large colonies....never figured out why though and I almost always lost the entire colony.

I have always thought that it was from my LPS since I keep a lot....I like the idea of running some carbon just to be safe.

Good luck.

don't run anything. don't dose anything. Just do water changes. Flow hasn't changed.

Could it have been from the anemone? Thats the only thing I can think of. You can kind of see it in the pic. Its to the upper right side of that coral.

It's possible the anemone started some kind of domino effect in that area. Like Erik said, I'd pull that piece and cut away the bleached spots. SPS will recover and grow new branches a lot fast than if you try to let the tissue regrow over the bleached areas.

ErikH

It is definitely possible. The other thing to take into account is that as corals grow, the flow pattern can get blocked more, which could affect neighboring corals. I would bet since the nem is so close that is your likely culprit. Also this is the time of year when temp swings start to cause issues, so keep an eye on things here soon, it hasn't really been cold enough yet. We are getting close though....

Guess I'll have to wait and see what it looks like today.

Is it the bonsai from me and pizza anemone? I wish you luck! Like Rob, I've never had much luck stopping it.

txav8r
Tue, 5th Oct 2010, 12:49 PM
It is the bonsai :( but its an anemone that I got from third coast Lindsay.

justahobby
Tue, 5th Oct 2010, 12:54 PM
What type is it? I would not suspect the anemone since other corals aren't suffering. That bonsai was a pretty tough coral. It came from Erik and survived STN in my tank. Hope it pulls through for you! Maybe a coral dip after fragging?

That really blows Jack. Im not a SPS keeper, but I do remember at one of our meeting where Jeremy was putting on the fragging presentation and said to frag when you notice RTN so that you do not loose everything.

Good Luck!

ErikH

I noticed that's a valida, may want to inspect it for AEFW eggs just to be safe. And if it is AEFW, you will have to FW dip.

...and that was with my Purple Tip Valida that was going through the same thing at the time which also died and I do believe everyone that got a frag from it also died. I'd be happy to hear that someone's frag from it lived.

I still have a tiny bit. The tips are dead, but it is growing back at the base.

I have Lugols Iodine. IS that what y'all would recomend?

Justin, the movie will have to wait. My kids left it at the cabin. :( I'll be going there on the 15th or so. I'll be sure to bring it back then. Sorry!

Tue, 5th Oct 2010, 02:35 PM
Well now you have me very curious.... what is the cry cry :*( movie?

Yeah, Lugol's is what I have always read / heard good things about (just really an iodine dip) but bare in mind I know very little about keeping SPS.

.

It's called "The Cove". It's in (well, should be in) the library. It's about the merciless slaughter of dolphins in Japan.

I will dip and "bank" for you. Just give me time, I'm a 6 hour dipper....hahahahaha

ErikH

I imagine it just had a nasty reaction to the nem's chemicals, and it wasn't done spreading around. Looks like it spread too fast to be a pest. Sorry man, hopefully the frags will pull through it unscathed. Are you running carbon now, or did you do a WC?

txav8r
Wed, 6th Oct 2010, 11:34 AM
Did a 15 gal water change and currently running carbon.

All the frags look good. Base of the original is almost completely bleached. Guess it's a good thing I fragged it after all.
Anemone is still moving around and headed for other SPS colonies. :(

Dude,

I've lost a lot over the last few weeks. And each time I see another little white tip I start worrying. I lost the BN bottom up, the green tort thing top down... the entire colony. I've got frags left but it seems that they're going too. My pink birdsnest is going as well. Not sure if it will pull through.

I've taken my auto top off Kalk offline and have returned to dosing the way I used to. But I'm not sure if that's the problem although it's the last thing that changed before my current loss began.

I noticed a couple of days ago that three or four tips of my green slimer has receded a bit. I'm also doing a daily five gallon water change. I lowered my temperature to just under 80 degrees as well.

Hey Jack,

Have you considered *real* food for your coral, something like Coral Frenzy, or any number of other foods? Also, do you dose by any chance? Have you tested for the usual array of things (Nitrate, Nitrite, Amonia, etc...?)? Also, if you're nervous it's getting worse, have you thought about shoving a Poly Filter pad in? It may help both combat whatever it *may* be (while possibly showing you due to it's magical fairy dust color changing), while not actually having any negative side effects.... (http://www.poly-bio-marine.com/polyfilter.html) I know gabe has them in stock, and they're dirt cheap (~12 bucks)

Also, it's AquaVitro Fuel ;) (http://www.aquavitro.com/Products/fuel.html)

Never have dosed anything. I used to use a 2 part but now I just do water changes weekly.
Never tried feeding them and probably won't change any time soon. most of my colonies are 4x bigger than they were when I got them so I've never really seen a need to throw in a bunch more food for them.
