I would like to order a par30 5 led bulb and can get a good discount if I buy 5. This is the link to the bulbs I'm looking at. http://www.rapidled.com/servlet/the-100/5-LED-PAR30-Bulb/Detail I want to go into alittle detail on why these are cheaper then the others, like ecoxotic or nanotuners. These are 12K like the others, but only 10w versus 21w. The other two companies are running the emitters at just over 1000mah. Rapidled is only running 500mah. This will use less power, create less heat, but have less par. They come with 60 degree optics versus 40 on the others. The price per bulb would be $64 To get a nanotuners w/ 60 degree optics is $125. Any questions please ask.

How many of these do you think would be needed to light a 40 breeder? Thats a helluva price

Depending on the style of lighting your looking for, I would think at least 5. I think evilc66 40b used 5, but his are ran at 1000mah versus 500mah. I would think 5-8.. I maybe able to get better prices if more then 5 are ordered.

Hmmmmm Im going to get at least one for sure, probably more but I need to think about what I want to do.

Im thinking I could use four and "spotlight" them more and closer to the tank. What does the 60 degree optics do over the 40? A wider spread right?

Where did you get the hardware from txg8gxp? Can you get the lamps from a hardware store and just order the bulbs?

You can use any standard lamp to hold these bulbs.

Steve, when are you wanting to do this order? I am thinking.......

Yes, any track light fixture/etc. will work for these bulbs. It is not recommended to use in dome fixtures, the bulb could overheat that way. I'm not in a major rush to order, I have time.

I'd like to get them kind of soon if possible! I decided on 3 bulbs, that will be enough to cover the tank left to right, and I'll be using two 39w t5's for supplementation and extra light, one in the front and one in the back. Let me know when we can get them!!

Ok, I just talked to mike at rapidled. Individual payment will be setup, and group shipping to my house is free. If wanted or needed for an additional $6 they can be shipped to your house. There is also alot of other stuff they carry, PAR38- 7 led, retro's, drivers, etc. If interested in anything else, let me know...I will see what I can do. http://www.rapidled.com/servlet/StoreFront

Yes, 60's will spread the light out alittle more...but will lower PAR

I don't think so, but I just sent mike at rapid an email asking. This is more money, but I think would make a great actinic suppliment. http://www.rapidled.com/servlet/the-103/CoralSky-SL-II-with/Detail

What about the 7 led par38 bulbs they have on the site? Are those also going to be discounted? I may have to give these a try.

Ok I am going to pull the trigger on these bad boys to help cover the sides of my tank. What do the name Par38 actually mean? As the other par38s have 5 leds but these have 7. Is that just to compensate from 10 watts to the 21 watts? Also are these running the same cree leds as the others? Im leaning toward 4 Par38 to try out.

Par16/30/38/40/etc. is normally a rating of the size of the bulb. Now why they call there's par30 not 38 like the others I'm not sure. I will mark you down for 4 right now, any other questions...please ask.

Ok, now that i'm not at work here is a better answer for you.
"No, PAR is not referring to the golf game; PAR (Parabolic Aluminized Reflector) is actually the description of the lamp or bulb that goes inside a PAR can. The can is the container where the PAR lamp or bulb goes. The number beside PAR is a measurement that describes the diameter of the PAR lamp or bulb. To figure out the diameter, divide the number next to PAR by eight. For example, if you have a PAR64, divide 64 by 8 and you will have an 8-inch diameter lamp. PAR56 has a 7-inch diameter lamp, and PAR46 has a 5.75-inch diameter lamp, and so on. The diameter of the PAR lamp is useful to know when ordering a replacement lamp."

Oh so PAR is just the size of the lamp the LEDs are contained inside. Thats good to know. Last question is have you found PAR readings on these specific lamps? I found evil66s PAR results but like you said they are ran different. Im still down for the 4 PAR38s I may just have to get my own results with our PAR meter when the time comes...

There is no PAR info on the rapidled bulbs. Evilc66's PAR results are on a 5 cree xr series emitters powered at 1A if I remember right. Rapidled's are 5-7 cree xr series emitters powered at .5A. So, lets say half the PAR. I know this is wrong, but the best I can tell you. I have ran these emitter from 350-1000mah, it seems like much above 700mah and you add more heat then lumens. I hope this helps alittle.

I willing to bet that the par38(7 led) will have similiar PAR levels as nanotuners par38(5 led) Similiar to the 60 degree par levels, not sure about the 40...I think that might be pushing it

Its cool. I will post up some PAR numbers when my turn comes around with the PAR meter. Thanks again for answering my questions.
