Just purchased a New RO/DI, my problem is I have no room under the kitchen sink.....So my other option is tapping into the water heater cold side.

Will thisbe safe?

This is not a good idea. I'm glad you asked before you did it. Water expands when it's heated. This will typically back up into the cold water line a bit. So if you're talking about tapping into the cold water line before the hot water, make sure its upstream by at least 10 ft. Hot water is bad for your RO unit, especially the membrane.

+1 on the washer line. It'd be much easier than using a saddle and tapping into the cold side of the water heater. Just get a metal splitter in the garden section of the hardware store and just split the cold water line from the washing machine. Plus you can run your waste water line into the washer drain line.

filter should get those metals out as long as you use metal fittings before the filter your ok. never after the di water will eat away over time

We also T off the cold water washerline. The added advantage of that is the unit's waste water tube goes down the washer drain line also... nice and easy.

I had a plastic one. When it busted, I felt like I was in an Indiana Jones movie. There was a tiny crack, then I touched it.... I have a metal one now, and would never do plastic ones again, lol.
