I am considering adding a rock anemone to my Caribbean reef - only if it leaves my other stuff alone.
So what's the scoop on that? Does it eat small fish (like Justahobby's 'peaceful' tube anemones)?
Does it move around? Sting stuff?

when you say they're sticky do you mean sticky enough to catch a small fish?

never saw a fish get near it, It held a hermit crab for a min by the shell till it pulled free. but I think the fish know better my twin spot and mandarin stay away from it at feeding time, will not touch food close to the nem.
your welcome to come by and put your hand in my tank and check it out.

Thanks so much. It's not often to get that kind of offer. Rock anemones might just be the one anemone for me then! :)

Again like most of the hobby there are different anemones under the same name. Epicystis crucifer is what I have and probably would be careful on small fish if you purchase one. It isnt quite as sticky as a carpet but pretty close. Are far as stinging I cant tell as I havent ever felt a sting from any anemone I have had.
I honestly have trouble thinking any anemone could kill a HEALTHY fish but I hear stories of this happening. My rock flower hasnt killed any of my fish, that i have seen.

Hey Karin, we had a pink rock flower anemone for years without incident bit it was pretty small. I was at the Austin Aquadome today and they had a great selection of them in different colors, several that were a vibrant red. Very tempting!

They are very tempting aren't they (how could you resist?!)
I am actually looking for the Epicystis crucifer - the Atlantic version of Rock Anemones (which will probably be a little more subdued as far as color goes)
I am hoping my little school of Atlantic Masked Gobies will recognize it and stay away!

I got mine from Darbys in New Braunfels. It was just the brown/white version. The Red ones are harder to come by but look very nice. If you look at the aquadome thread "New and wonderful" I think was the name, they have the pics of the red ones. Very very tempting.
Note to self-I need to make a trip up there again.

could this critter be a rock anemone?

I got some macro and this thing was attached, seemed bigger at first then deflated quite a bit. Currently the size of a time. I put that frag plug on the piece of algae to keep it from floating around and the critter attached to that plug in record speed!
So what is it? Some kind of fancy aiptasia?

I've never seen a majano. I didn't put it in the main tank so I can easily retrieve it if necessary (that's why I snipped it off and put it in there)

I'm not sure though...I have only seen majanos in live once before in Giau's old big boy tank. It's confusing searching online though...because they all start to look the same...immature bta's, rock anemones and majanos....perhaps some of the scientific id pros will chime in.
FYI: Anemonea cf. Majano

Doesn't look like any of the majano I've seen in LFS's. And for the record karin, My little yellow watchmen got his tail caught a couple times when he was first dropped in he tank and had no problem getting out :p

okay I am now convinced it is a majano.
It's jsut too vigorous to be anything but a pest. Already made itself a home now on the rock and looking as happy as can be.
The little arms are wiggling. It's kind of cute but I don't want gazillions of them in the main tank.
Anybody want a super cool free majano anemone?
