this will be a running list of the corals we (maast members) believe are good beginner sps corals.

if you would like to add a coral to this list, please post it here along with why (personal experience) it should be included.

other things that would be helpful:

pics
how long have you had it?
what are its food/light/flow requirements?
what other organisms is it compatible/incompatible with?
anything else you can think of

Well it's not a fish but I found the purple blue Montipora Digitata to be indestructible (like ORA German blue polyp digi)
I had it in high light, medium flow and kept it for a couple of months where it exhibited good growth.
Nothing bothered it and it didn't bother anything else.

Green slimer is a good beginner sps. Very tolerant of different flows and different placements within the tank. Very hardy and doesn't seem to mind if your water quality isn't the greatest.

Montipora capricornis as well. Same as the green slimer and very tolerant to different light levels.

Birdsnests are pretty fast growing and will grow in pretty much anything

Montipora caps are the same

Pretty much any Monti actually should be relatively easy

all sps are easy if you put the time into your tank and learn to keep things stable in your system. i still have things mysteriously die in my tank sometimes i can trace it back to an error i did and sometimes there is no answer. the problem i see most of time is people chasing numbers, they try to hold that exact number and do all sorts of things not knowing all these swings are stressing coral. if you dont want to invest in good equipment or the time to learn your system then sps is not the venture for you.
last week i had a digi no reason but my "high end" hard to keep corals are fine. all my test came out the same as they usually are so i just left it as is and wrote it off as crap happens.

I like the thread ideas. Obviously some sps are easier than others such as birdnest, digi and caps.

Red planet is a beast. I had a chunk survive tank crashes. Tumbling nems. Being knocked into the sand. And all sorts of nonsense and it didn't even recess a little bit. Lost color once or twice. But it was a machine. And I loved the color.
