Ok, with the weather being nasty the last few days, my wife asked me what happens if...? referring to when the power goes out. I had thought of a UPS but don't think that would last long. I noticed on another thread that praise was heaped on the Vortech batteries. The Vortech appears to be around $300-$400 for backup and pump. So, my question is what do you use and do you see any problem using a 3kw generator (I can also have coffee when the lights go out) which would be about the same price as the Vortech.

Multiple battery operated air pumps work great and if you can keep the temp stable then you are good for 24hours....probably more.

I would definitely spend the money on a generator than a UPS! :)

It would be much better to keep the whole system running rather than just the vortech.

Currently I use my inverter for my car since we do not lose power enough to justify the cost of either a generator or ups.

I put a hose in the water and blow bubbles untill the power comes back on ☺

Not really!

Battery operated air pumps come in handy.

Harbor freight has an 80w gen for about $89 that would run enough stuff to keep your tank aerated. A power inverter works great but so far have relied on battery air pumps.

There is a battery air pump that you plug in and it only turns itself on when the power goes out. I use that for the fuge.

That sounds perfect. Do you remember brand/model of this?

Here's a link to an air pump that is like the one mentioned in this thread Its from a website that I buy a bunch of things from.

It's only 20 bucks and I'm planning on plugging it into a UPS that runs my main pump, so when all else fails the air pump will kick off.
