View Full Version : Frags, what do you do when you get them?

Do you pull them off the plugs? do you glue them to rock? do you leave them and then trim the plug down to stick it to a rock? I'm more just wondering who does what when they bring home the bacon :)

it depends of how lazy im being ... i like when i just glue the coral to my rock ( it seems to take off faster) but lots of time i just leave it on the plug esp when its only one or 2 heads

I did notice a difference when i stared glueing larger frags to LR, in a lot of cases a few days in, it started to grow... interesting observation though :)

Well, now I am dipping all corals in Tropic Marin Pro Coral Cure before they go into my frag tank. TMPCC is the only proven dip that will kill off AEFW. It will not affect the eggs however, so a visual inspection is always necessary to see if there are eggs. If they are encrusted to a plug, I will break the top off, and glue it inside the display, leaving the plug to grow out in my frag tank. The frag tank is a seperate system from my display. I glue the frags the same way that they were glued to the plug. Some people will lay them flat to encourage the coral to encrust faster. This is a good method as most corals will not grow up, until they have grown out.

I *hate* plugs. They look so unnatural. I glue them to rubble as soon as possible. Sometimes I can manage to pry them off the plug and re-glue them easily, but sometimes I have to break the plug with bone cutters to make it look like a somewhat normal rock before placing it in my reef. I understand the importance of plugs in propagating corals, but they look horrible in my tank.

Have you seen the plugs / rock / whatever it is that the FHI stuff comes on? It's kinda nice, but I know what you mean about LRR, do you glue that down too? and don't you have issues with things pushing you LRR out the way? how do you cure the LRR? just leave it dry?

Wow, that sucks... good note. What do you dip them in? I mean container wise ;)

I used to just buy and throw in the tank, sometimes on plugs...something I would glue. No more, I now get to play with red bugs. For now on everything is getting removed off of the rock/plug and going through a long...long dipping. I'm working on setting up a 2-5g tank with maxijet 900, heater and light and may dip for as long as 6 hours.

I love the FHI plugs! Those, I leave alone. They're still obvious when they're new, but only as much as the frag that's growing on them. They blend in in no time.

I glue the rubble down if I have to, but often I don't. My rock is the fiji totoka style, so it's got lots of spikes to wedge stuff in between. I've avoided turbos and large hermits, so my clean up crew hasn't caused much damage. When I am gluing to LRR, I let it cure out of the tank for a bit if possible. So far my softie tank doesn't have anything delicate to worry about. Lucky for me, I love the hard to kill stuff.

I'm 50/50 on plugs vs. breaking them off and glueing to the LR. I guess it all depends on what the frag is.

I'm a foam guy so my plugs go directly into the foam or the tubes I have mounted in my foam for holding plugs. I like to let the coral encrust/grow off the plug and onto the foam or rock. Once the coral grows out I like to remove the plug and cut it up a couple of times and trade the coral out to get more coral.

Obviously I don't mind the plugs because the coral grows over them anyways. In the past I was pretty anal about it and would remove all of the corals from the plugs but that's because I was being impatient.

i just let it grow around the plug and then place in my main tank once the plug is covered. sometimes remove the coral really just depens on my mood and coral type like the galaxia i have stayed on the plug and looks awesome and i was able to mount it vertical in a hole that was in the rock and let it incrust that way.

I let zoas and palys encrust the plug. SPS I break off or drill a frag size hole in a piece of rubble and glue it into the hole
