my dad is upgrading from his 30 cube to a 58 gallon tank. we got the stand and canopy built today along with drilling the drain hole and installing the round overflow. should be ready to pass it on to him tomorrow evening so he can stain it and set it up later this week.

it will have a 29 gallon tank for a sump (still have to add the baffles), a moderately large nw skimmer (dont know the brand - no markings), a pc light fixture with moonlights, mag 9.5 for a return pump and a sicce circulation pump in the tank.

here the lumber we used - 1.5 sheets of plywood not pictured

all of the equipment/tanks

here it is just before stopping for the day

still have to hang the cabinet doors, sand, stain/finish, add baffles to the sump, do the plumbing, and paint the end that will face the wall.

looks wonderful (of course)
(and wow you look a lot like your dad!)

Looking forward to the update tomorrow after breakfast when I am sure all of this will be finished:

hang the cabinet doors, sand, stain/finish, add baffles to the sump, do the plumbing, and paint the end that will face the wall

I like the cylindrical overflow. I wish I had your woodworking skills, it sure would make it easy to build a stand for my 110!

Looks great Ace, I wish I could get my Mother into having an aquarium. The only thing she has had in the last two years was a betta bowl, which is said because we grew up as a kid always having an aquarium in the home.

yeah, it is nice to have my dad interested in the hobby. my mom, on the other hand, would rather he didnt spend the money :)

here is a pic of the 30 cube just before starting the transfer this evening

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c329/hobogato/dads%2058/DSC07036.jpg

here, we have moved everything to the new sump so we can switch out the tanks since the new one is going in the same place as the other

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c329/hobogato/dads%2058/DSC07038.jpg

here is the sump running at its maximum level - dropped the level a bit and now it is nearly silent

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c329/hobogato/dads%2058/DSC07044.jpg

got everything in the new tank - just waiting for the water to clear overnight

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c329/hobogato/dads%2058/DSC07045.jpg

the overflow works very well and the diy silencer is nearly silent

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c329/hobogato/dads%2058/DSC07046.jpg

here it is from the other side

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c329/hobogato/dads%2058/DSC07048.jpg

will go back over in the morning to help him get everything else situated

one more pic to share

also covered the overflow with black acrylic to keep fish and light out

the fish and corals already look pretty happy

Looks great Ace, but I have a question on (also covered the overflow with black acrylic to keep fish and light out) In my tank pods love the overflows to reproduce. If you cut out the light does that stop them from reproducing there?

hobogato
Wed, 15th Sep 2010, 06:54 AM
i dont see why it would alton, i used to have lots of pods in my cryptic fuge that had no light on it.

my dad did the finish on it, i think he just used that stain/seal in one stuff. i think it is called polyshades

that overflow looks great!

Looks great Ace. Good idea on the round overflow.

thanks, it just seemed to fit well with the orientation of the tank.

the eel looks funny lol he was a good eater hope he is doing well for you

yea, he eats like an eel :D tried to bite me a few time when moving him from the smaller tank to this one

Is there any added benefit to the circular overflow other than aesthetics? BTW, the tank and stand look great!

thanks

it is the smallest footprint to volume ratio possible with a bottom drille drain overflow, but mostly we just thought it would look nice :)

he keeps it well fed, so no issues so far. i have had snowflakes before, and they are usually pretty safe with fish - they do like to eat shrimp tho.
