View Full Version : Who says you cant use Corpus Christi/ Padre Island canal water ????

signal_4
Fri, 3rd Sep 2010, 01:19 PM
Hi, well here is my 215 reef tank running strictly on Padre Island Canal water. Ive have been using the water with no side effects what so ever since December of 2009. Infact when I do a water change everything perks up
probably because the water is enriched with phyto. Also Red Mangrove seed pods are washing up every where here. 94069407940894099410http://www.maast.org/images/misc/pencil.png

Nice looking tank. I'd be interested in hearing more about it. Especially details about water parameters since you are getting directly from the coast. Changes in the parameters during seasons and storms? Is your water all that's from the gulf?

signal_4

Mr Cob ... everything as far as parameters is spot on as it should be.. Salinity does change as far as the seasons go. In the winter its usually low to right on and in the summer its usually a little high. Also depends on the amount of rain and tides I guess... Last time I did a water change which was about a week ago the specific gravity was at 1.026. I usually just adjust the amount of fresh water added if the salinity is to high. If its right on as in last week it goes right in. I also run Chemi Pure Elite carbon in the system. The water comes from the Gulf at first you could say, but its really Laguna Madre water

I visited a not so local LFS in Huntington beach California and the dude had three tanks of water for sale. One was rodi, the second was premixed and salted water, but the third, at almost the same price, was water taken from the coast.

He said there were a lot of customers who used nothing else than that water.

Anyway, nice tank dude, really nice.

Jarob
Fri, 31st Dec 2010, 09:25 PM
Wow it looks great! I did that in my first small tank when I moved here, I would walk to the very end of the jetties to get the "freshest" water in my opinion and bring back two 5gal. buckets every other week.. Im too scared to use it now though with how much I have invested in livestock..

SoLiD
Sat, 1st Jan 2011, 12:35 AM
Yeah Jarob... My thoughts would be the same. I would think that there would be too many contaminants between all the boats, ships, & who knows what else all these unscrupulous people dump in there. These people treat our local beaches worse than a toilet.... And the way it smells at our
beaches here doesn't give me the faith to even try it.... OMG Geezuss! :)

Hope yall were able to see the growth from all the pics.. I took a big hit and lost several heads to my original candy canes and one of my frogspawns to maybe some introduced parasite or bacterial, was able to save about 5 heads out of about 25 of the frogspawn after interceptor dips. The Candy cane fared much better... There are also several other corals that I dont have time lapse pics of but have shown remarkable growth in the past few months. And now Im off to GCREEF to see what else I cant fit into this crammed tank !!!...lol

LOL.. I usually look for calm water and clarity and try to go at high tide but that always dosent happen. i always wear gloves so that when I swim down I can grab ahold of some big rocks so I can have a look around before I have to come back up. no need for flipper fins...just some good water shoes will be fine. No problem with boats....currents you just have to feel them out and how good of a swimmer you are...never seen a shark but no doubt at all they are there ! If it wasnt illegal, I would have flooded them with all kinds of frags and life ! lol

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think one lone Lion Fish would be able to Procreate :sarcastic:. Some people seem to recall that an ocean front house was wiped out during a hurricane. It was said to house a huge predator tank with multiple large lion fish in it. I heard this about 6 years ago, but I don't remember who said it.

Obviously a blanket statement for those responsible. While it may be true that a home was destroyed in a hurricane and pulled into the ocean with broken glass and wreckage, and that in finding nemo 2 somehow the lion fish survived and had a wonderful life with many children, the more likely story is ignorance. In a hurricane situation power goes out for great lengths of time. In addition people are forced to evacuate depending on hurricane grade. Now if you were a loving fish owner and had a combination of no power and low ability to gauge the impact of your actions would you want to save your cute little lion fish? We have to remember that even though this is a high end hobby it isn't always followed by high end brain cells.

Yeah, my thoughts exactly. You have some good video editing skills... along with some awesome snorkeling skills... I was in a panic when you swam through that ship. It was cool though.

Well last Wednesday I guess I decided to try and get rid of some pesty mohanoe nems that were starting to make a presence... I mixed up a 1/4 vinegar/ 3/4 lemon juice solution and began injecting them. I also wanted to get rid of some palay polyps and did some test injections on them. In total I used about 15 ml of the solution in the tank. Later on that night I noticed that my birdsnests, catspaw, hammer, frogspawn corals were all sucked in and not happy. Thinking that the solution might have changed the ph a bit I added some ph buffer to counter act it. I have not needed test kits for the past 3 years since using the natural water and had given them all away to local friends who were starting tanks. the next morning the everythig still looked angry so I did about a 4 hour constant water change. Later on that night about 11:30 pm I noticed that my long nose hawk fish, copper band butter fly and urchin were upside down dead. The hundreds of brittle stars were falling to the sand bed like a heavy rain. I immediately removed every coral that had been looking angry or on its way out, called a buddy who lives near by with test kits. he came right over and we got to doing another water change. There water a high level of ammonia in the tank. Also that night I lost one of the female anthias and the yellow tang. Once the tank was cycled through with fresh salt water and the amminia was back at zero we called it a night at around 2:30 am. The next morning got up at 8 and started another constant water change and did so till about 3 pm. Also went and got about 4 lbs of carbon and another 3 lbs of zeolite and let the tank do its thing. Also siphoned the sand bed to remove all the dead brittle stars and what ever else. Noticed that the cleaner wrasse while alive was not looking so good... Also that day I could tell that the dersa clams was finished as well as a hairy mushroom and some acro frags and removed them. The next day found the cleaner wrasse, the other female anthias and the cling fish dead. Also my elephant ear mushroom was starting to expose its guts and split apart from the center out. I removed it and even though it didnt smell like death, it is now sitting in the canal to see if it was dying or just being angry. Things seem to be stable today there has been no more deaths and everything that has survived is open or swimming around like a normal day.... Did another hour long water change today as I could see that some of the spongers were turning white and siphoned out whatever dead tissue I could see. so we seem to be on the mend but I would say that I have lost half of the fish and half of the coral some of which I have had for 6 years now. Hear is a list that I can think of.

Losses Coral

Huge colony of Catspaw
Huge colony of green fuzzy birdsnest
large colony of regular spikey birds nest.
1 Large colony and 1 small of german blue digi.
1 medium colony of blue bottle brush acro.
loss of all orange cap, green cap and blue/green monti
hairy mushroom
elephant ear mushroom (pending)
2 small colony of acans
large colony of branching hammer
1 large and 2 small colony of branching frogspawn....1 green and 1 purple tipped
large Dersa clam

Losses fish
yellow tang
blue hippo tang
cleaner wrasse
long nose hawk fish
falthead cling fish
copper band butter fly
2 female lytretail anthias

Not sure exactly what happened as 15 ml should not have affect 240 gallon system.... what ever started out as a prob small problem quickly evolved into a major crash.... I will try to make a list of survivors later on.
