View Full Version : Oxidizers and Antibiotics

Learned something interesting today when researching cyano cures.
Obviously the first types available were mostly antibiotics that killed the bad bacteria (cyano) along with the good.
Then the newer kinds (like the second generation Red Slime Remover and ChemiClean) are oxidizers.
What's new to me about those is that oxidizers can be damaging to fish gills. Not in a 'it will kill them right away' kind of way but more like 'survivable but damaged' kind of way.
(I am imagining it similar to smokers' lungs)
Anyway just something else I read that I thought might be useful for somebody at some time... ;)

I've been going the enzyme route with Zeozym and couldn't be happier. Not an oxidizer. Not an antibiotic.
It's slow progress but I'd say my cyano has been reduced by 80% and I could happily live with what's left.
I cheated a little bit and added blue leg hermits (C. tricolor) -after I saw some progress with the zeozym- and they have been doing a wonderful job cleaning rocks, corals, even sponges.
Everything is looking really good. I'm happy :)

Did you ever try phosban, phospahte remover, or any of those products? It has worked well for me in the past and will be changing out my carbon(which is in my reactor now) to this to help reduce what is fueling the algae. I know that I still will need to eventually address the cause(which I blame on skimmerless, and moving tanks three times) but we will see.

Zeozym, okay I'm going to have to try that.

Did you try it?
I suffered another cyano bloom after I took the pellets off-line. Wow it was fierce. I could barely look at it.
Had to close my eyes to feed the fish.
Got it back under control with zeozym. That stuff is shockingly expensive but I love how reliable and gentle it is. Takes a couple of weeks of daily or every other day dosing so it's not an overnight fix.
And luckily it goes quite a long way.
But it feels so good to have the red melt away without damaging anything else :)
