I got tired of my 37 Oceanic Cube setup so when I moved 2 months ago I began a new tank project. I finally just caved in and bought a 40 RR breeder from Aquarium Masters because of the great deal and practicality for a college student.

My plans are to create a clean/modern looking aquarium setup to house mainly LPS, a seperate Zoa tank will be plumbed into the system as well. The stand is 44" tall to give it a unique perspective. (42x24x44")

Plans:
Foam the tank - Check
Build modern furnuture looking stand - In the works
Stain the stand - To Do
Plumb the tank to my 15g Sump and hook up equiptment - To Do
Stock the tank - To Do
Build DIY LED setup to replace my 7 bulb T5 - To do

I will be using my old 15g sump and mag 9.5 as a return for both the 40 and the 12g long Zoa tank. There will be a SCWD for the return part on the 40g as well as two Koralia Evo 750's. Still questioning flow options for the 12g Zoa tank. An AcJr will be running everything. Im still debating using a skimmer, maybe just a few days a week.

I'll update this thread as I make progress!

-Jarob

In the pictures you can see the stand design im following, my beautiful new Birch wood for the skin, the frame of the stand with the tank on it, the tank all foamed up, and the paints/primer/finish.

Referring to the drawing of the stand, the top looking drawer will actually be fake, there for just suppot, the second drawer will pull out and have all my euipt/ATO/AcJr/DC8 and other "dry" stuff. Then the two doors swing upen to expose the sump and ATO water.

Some more pics, all out of order... and one of my old tank.

The stand is getting close to completion, I still need to stain it and paint the top and bottoms black. The doors are held on by magnets to allow easy access to the sump and equiptment.

Oh man I transferred all of the corals and fish this weekend and WOW it looks better than I expected. I havent been able to fully appreciate the beauty of my corals in those rubbermaid tubs they've been in for months!

I would love some suggestions on fish now. I want to add a few more fish to the system, something on the small size and it would be nice if they stayed in a group. Current fish include a mystery wrasse, onyx clown pair and a dispar anthias (wouldnt mind selling him off). How deep should the sand be for a goby/pistol shrimp pair?

Pics as soon as I get new batteries for my camera.

Sad day.. Im feeding my tank and dont see my Mystery Wrasse, my favorite fish Ive had for awhile. Start searching and look in the sump and see my Sargassum fish dead. This sargassum was awesome and my other favorite fish, Ive had him for about 4 months now and he eats peperment shrimp from my hand, very cool. Right behind the sump, my mystery wrasse on the floor. My mesh top is in the mail and should be here by the end of this week too.

Lesson learned: No matter how short the time, have mesh top ON before fish are in.

On a good note my coral has never looked healthier. A beautiful scolymia I bought a few months ago mostly dead has been recovering great and shows great polyp extension and is coloring up nicely... yay

Good news, I am now a charter member finally. Oh yea and I bought a Vortech mp10 ES and got my screen top in place, no more jumpers ever again. OH and may have found a new t5 lighting system for the tank, probably will be playing around with LED spotlights too soon.

I took pictures, now to upload them..

Thanks I'm really proud of that stand, Ive never built anything like that before.. LOTS of planning! Im making a OPEN canopy for it this weekend and decided on my lighting: 2 39w t5's in the front and back for supplementation and 3 PAR30 led bulbs.

Thanks all!

Im using a 4-39w t5 retro with two ATI blue plus and two current bulbs (I forget which models). The two current will be replaced with another ATI blue plus and a KZ fiji within a month or two. I LOVE t5's due to their colors, but I will be adding some LEDS for shimmer soon too.

As soon as I get back to corpus I will take some new pics, it looks way better now than these old pictures.

Got my new Ocean Wave + RO/DI hooked up a few hours ago and happily awaiting some super clean water, Ill be doing 10% water changes every other day for the next 10-15 days just to refresh my system. I have some algae right now from the neglect, i havent touched my tank in about a month.. but believe it or not some of my corals look better than ever, the LPS and goorgs really seem to like the dirtier water but its not worth the extra algae to me.. Also I got a new waterproof digatal camera so Ill take new pics soon!

The waterproof cameras are cool. Still scares me when I stick mine in the tank though. I trashed a very expensive strobe light the first dive I used it on because I didn't seal the battery compartment properly. Now everything gets triple checked.

Which camera did you get?

Jarob
Thu, 10th Feb 2011, 10:42 PM
I got the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS2. I just used it tonight for the first time in my fish tank and took some of the most amazing coral pictures. Im more than pleased with this camera. Ill try and post them tonight!
