Someone at work is selling the following for $500:
Canon Digital Rebel XTi 10.1 MP dSLR
Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 Zoom Lens
2GB memory card
Battery
Battery Charger
USB Cable
Strap
Case (This case has been perfect for carrying camera, battery charger, and three lenses.)
Canon Photo Printer (not pictured)
Is this a good deal or are there better deals out there? I'm a camera noob so I thought I'd check before I made him an offer.

from 389 used without a lens. New lenses vary in price. I would say it's a fair deal, but I would say 425 cash deal. 2GB card will fill up quick if shooting at high res. They come with a battery and charger when you buy them new, as well as a strap. They may even have the printer as a freebie. Look up the cost of the new ink....
Also ask when the last time the camera was professionally cleaned. That costs about 50 bucks. Also, you would want a macro lens for Aquarium pics, so look up a 120mm macro and see what that costs. It adds up FAST!

I don't really know much about cannon, but looks like just the xti body sells for around $500 w/o lens. 18x55mm is a small lens, but standard with alot of kits.

I found one on eBay for $350 with lens. I told him that and he said he could only do $450. I'll have to think about it. Doesn't seem like a steal which is usually what I try to go for.

how about 400 and he can keep the photo printer?

I could try!
Can you guys help me find the lens I would need for good tank pictures? I know Erik said 200mm but I'm still lost. That's what I'd be using it for the most I think so good lens will be something I have to get. Thank you guys!

You can do well with a Canon 100mm macro for $500 +/- (used 400) or you can step up to the 180mm macro for $1400 +/- (used 900)

I took the plunge and bought a used Canon XSi. It came with a 18-55 lens and some other accessories. Now if I can just figure out how to use it. :) I see a decent macro lens in my future but I'd like to get good pictures of my tank with what I have. So far, nothing but crap. I'm trying with just actinic's on and haven't had good luck. I guess I need more practice. I'm still trying to figure out the different modes and settings.

actinic shots are more difficult than full light shots imo. get a decent tripod and use the camera self timer when you are taking those low light shots, it makes it much easier.

Cool, I'll check that out. I need a good book.
A tripod is something I was going to pick up very soon.

Another great macro lens that may run less than the Canon 100mm but arguably just as good is the Tamron 90mm that may run a little less. I own that one as well as my Nikon 105mm just because I like it that much.
Just a thought.

Ramsey, I'll see if I can get a picture of my tripod. I am not using it now since my camera got broke. It is a pretty good one I will let go...as you say...a steal...lol
