View Full Version : AEFW..."The Treatment" Losses!!!

Kind of a sad day today. Just spent 5 hours undoing 2 years worth of growth today.

In order to avoid reintroducing unwanted algaes, I decided to clip, chip, and chop all of my sps and attach to new ceramic bases. This was also needed because on closer inspection, many of my sps colonies had tons of AEFW egg sacks near the bases.

I'm hoping this can also increase my chances of completing this treatment without losing whole colonies, since I was able to make multiples of each coral. Guess time will tell.

First the sad part. This was my very first sps frag:

Here's the remnants:

Then the new frags were placed on egg crate:

Then a betadine mixture of 3ml per liter of saltwater was added:

After 25 mins the entire rack was placed in a different tub w/clean saltwater:

Each frag was then washed in 3 different buckets of saltwater and placed into qt:

Of course all the frags looked stressed, but so far nothing looks too catastrophic. The next round of treatment will be this coming Friday. The liverock from the main tank will be pulled this week, in order to begin the cooking process.

Best of luck to you Cory. Looks like you are putting a lot of effort into this.

Thanks Jack. I couldn't of attempted this without the collective knowledge of our club.

Karin, poor habits on my part are to blame for this. Hopefully others can learn from this.

Chris, the blue digi I got from you is looking great! I did place it on another plug. I may hit you up in a few months when this all comes back together and see if we can trade or bank some corals.

Checked out the qt today after getting home from work. Looks like there's a couple loses so far. Both ORA Borealis frags and 3 frags of a purple maricultured piece all looked DOA. The green stylo also looks to have some tissue necrosis.

Well, the stylo went STN on my last night. Fragged what I could and did a 60% water change in the qt. Also added a skimmer to the qt. Woke up this morning to see both frags of a blue tenius and most of the fhi frags also developed STN overnight. So far, about half of the 36 frags may die. I'm seeing tissue loss and polyp bailout.

Went ahead and moved the blue torts, and a few other pieces back into the display tank. Not sure how to proceed from here.

CoryDude,
I think you are very dedicated for trying to save what you can. At this point I'd probably be so disheartened to just give up and get rid of it all so whatver survives will survives because of your hard work. Stupid bugs!

Pretty much a domino effect going on right now, with one after another going down. Not sure what I did wrong here. A lot of the lost sps were showing showing heavy flatworm damage to begin with, so I'm guessing that the stress of that, plus fragging, plus dipping, plus being put in qt was just too much.

Sorry to hear of the losses. You are probably guessing correctly with the damage to the colonies to begin with and then the extra stress placed on them with the dipping process is causing the dramatic losses. Are you able to monitor the water qualities in the dipping process and holding tanks? Maybe too much of a swing in parameters?

Thanks FireWater. I tried to match the hold tank ph/alk to the main tank's (8.3 and 5 meq/L). The dipping tubs and rinsing buckets were close, but a little lower (8.1 and 4meq/L). Pretty much a lost cause at this point on most of the corals. The only thing I've been able to save so far are the blue tort and german blue digi.

For some reason the opening quote to the Six Million Dollar Man keeps running through my head:
"Gentlemen, we can rebuild him. We have the technology. We have the capability to build the world's first bionic man....better, stronger, faster"

Cory, sorry to hear about your situation. It's probably a start over situation but when you are ready, I have some stuff you can start with...us hard-headers...I mean hard coral keepers need to continue...:)

Thanks Steve. I plan on setting up the tank right this time. So yeah, it's pretty much an excuse to buy some new goodies.

Ah, thanks for asking Dylan. Naw, I pretty much lost everything. Only thing that made it was a blue tort and a blue digi. I'll be tearing down what left of the 90 gallon and converting to a a new 120 gallon that's coming in next week (keeping my fingers crossed). I'm really starting to have restless tank syndrome since my 90 gallon tank is a lame duck at this point.
