GE silicone 1 not 2. Just make sure it doesn't have mildew stuff in it. Or could always get the stuff from LFS

Stay away from anything that says kitchen or bath, or says mildew resistant.

Needs to be a 100% silicoln not anything you can get at a hardware store for sure. I didn't know the made a under water type Hummm!!! That's interesting I will have to check on that. I have built my tanks and sumps out of plexiglass for so many years I guess I'm spoiled!!! Lol

I found out that momentive 100 silicones are what aquarium manufacturers use. It is an industrial silicone, not a consumer silicone. Grainger carries it.

Sorry to hijack but I figured it was better than beginning a new thread. I am building a sump with plexiglass from lowes. Will the momentive 100 work on the entire thing? The dimesions are 30" long x 15.5" Wide x 14" Tall. I can put supports throughout as long as it is strong bonding silicone.

How thick is the Plexiglas.problem may be with bowing of the long Faces which will cause the seams to fail

Man I cant remember, its the second thickest stuff at lowes if I remember correctly. Its not quite 1/4" i dont think. What do you suggest? Shorten the sump altogether?

Plexiglass and silicone is a bad idea. You need to use "weld on 3" to bond the acrylic. Silicone will not work.

where would I find that? Lowes and HD don't carry it do they?

Lowes sells special silicone for Plexiglas but don't no if its aquarium safe. The Plexiglas at Lowes is about the same price as regal or allied plastics here in San Antonio over off of rittiman. They sell the glue there.

U will probably need a whole sheet of acrylic to make a sump that long.

Silicoln will not adhere to plexi it is not strong enough you must use weld on #4 you can usally get this at a plexi glass warehouse if they will sell it to you. You can use plexi inside of a glass aquarium but will leak after some time. The best way would be to do a glass aquarium and have Lowes cut the glass for you.

I have done that b4 but the glass was so sharp. I guess I could sand it down?

The momentive, is it for glass only? And is it stronger than the normal silicone?

Yes, momentive is silicone and silicone is for glass, it is stronger than normal silicone because it is commercial grade not consumer grade. I did a project with both and found out the hard way. Grainger has momentive's MSDS with strengths, cure times, etc...
