I have a DIY Auto Top off on the 180g. It has a fault. The float valve will becomes stuck im assuming from salt creep. This obviously is a problem because it allows all the fresh top off water (several gallons) to flow into my sump. Which will effect my salt levels, possibly over flow my sump, and stress out inhabitants in the tank.
Last night it emptied around 5 gallons into my sump.:bareteeth:
Anyone else have a DIY top off or a suggestion on a better float valve?

I have a jbj and never had any issues, just a couple times the top off tube fell in sump and started a syphon. the jbj is very easy to use.

I think you can get some salt creep eliminator at petco. I believe this will help with the problem but other than that I guess just clean it from time to time.

my top off line is pointed directly at the float so that the incoming fresh water rinses off the float each time the water comes in.

That is what I would do too. Just point it to your problem area.

Vinegar works great on hardened salt! A turkey baster should be enough without worrying it will give you cyano. And then "Just point it to your problem area" LOL, classic!
