I went and got my red headlamp the other day and decided to take a look in my tank when the lights go out. So about 10 min into the light going out i noticed alot of things i never seen in there before. There was many dime size crabs with white claws that were just picking at the rocks, A very large bristle worm about a foot, i plucked three zoanthid eating spiders off one of my zoanthid frags. Im more worried about the spiders and crabs. I sat really still over one of the crabs holes with a pair of tweezers until he came back out and tried to pluck him out but that lil booger was fast. I noticed one of these crabs before and took the rock out and got him out but couldn't id him. My camera wont take good pictures soo i cant post pics. My other concern is that its almost midnight and im sitting in front of my aquarium with a headlight on with a pair of tweezers in my hand. Is this normal behavior?

Yes. Totally normal.

Got rid of a little crab by jamming a paperclip in there and wiggling it around. What kind of cave has he made for himself? Could also put a dab of superglue over the entrance and hope he doesn't have a back door escape route.

Throw some food in and you'll see even more amazing things come out.

Is this a homemade red light or did you purchase it this way? If you purchased it, can you post a linky please?

Thanks,

I got mine at the depot for under $10, but its not very bright. I'm considering one of these in blue for day use and red for night use:

I love night spying on the tank.
Just not sure if the red led stylus would be just as effective for covert viewing.

You would have to ask the guys at Coralpedia. I just did an image search for Zoanthind eating spiders.

thats a zoanthid eating spider. I had a problem with them before in my last tank. The colony i plucked them off of was the one that starting looking poor here recently. I was up until about one sitting in my dark living room with the red light on my head and didnt notice anything else new but peanut worms.

I seriously need to try this out. Maybe I can find out why I have lost hundreds of dollars recently (over a 4 month period) on the inhabitants of my Red Sea Max. I lost both of my wife's Picasso clowns:cry_smile: , my mystery wrasse, 2 blue jaw triggerfish, a tiny clown trigger and a load of corals (these were not all in the tank at the same time). The parameters are all within range, and just to be on the safe side I also had the water checked at a LFS. The losses all seem to happen overnight to early morning. It has become a moneypit and frustrating to say the least. I have never had these problems before on any of my other tanks.
