hey folks,

I know this is early but in about a month I'm gonna try one of them group orders. Just wanted to put that out there. I have a buddy that lives down the street that will be needing a CUC and I'm in a desperate need of a few Cyano Specific Predators. I'll probably get a dozen of them.

But end state is that I pick up the final batch that will give me a complete CUC suited for my tank.

If you're interested tag in and as the time draws near I'll start getting this active. I'll give a two week notice to the final jump.

If the dragon's breath they have is the same as the dragon's breath txg8... had then I want some more for my new tank. Gotta check with them. There's free floating and rooting - I want root free ;)

I think I'll join in on this. I'll post my order when we get closer

allan
Thu, 17th Jun 2010, 11:10 AM
Sounds good! Karin, I've tried the dragons breath before with no luck. Disappeared on me. Perhaps I'll try it with this batch as well. My intent is to get more chitons this time around. I bought three last time and I think only one made it. One definitely went belly up.

Hm. The bunch I got from Stephen is doing great. I want more. Then again I guess it will grow all by itself...

So what's your plan for cyano specific predators? Chitons?

Europhyllia

chiton don't eat cyano. they're very cute though!

Kristy
Thu, 17th Jun 2010, 12:16 PM
Yeah, I was trying to figure out what he had in mind by "Cyano Specific Predators"... maybe unicorns and leprechauns? Although the other day I thought that Mike's cucumber seemed to be working on a patch, but that was probably coincidence.

txav8r
Thu, 17th Jun 2010, 01:03 PM
Allan is pretty big into unicorns. I think it has something to do with his femininity.

Kristy
Thu, 17th Jun 2010, 01:15 PM
hey folks,

I am hoping that the unicorns' horns will break apart the cyano and then they can sprinkle some fairy dust to keep it from coming back, which will give me a complete CUC suited for my tank.

Oh yeah, I should have known.

allan
Thu, 17th Jun 2010, 02:42 PM
hah, I had to go back and ensure my post still represented the true spirit of "allan" and not the libelious words printed by ya kristy.

Jack, I'm gunning now. BTW, are we going to do the frag rack fest?

Thu, 17th Jun 2010, 02:46 PM

I'm interested, too. What are the requirements for the group buy?

txav8r
Thu, 17th Jun 2010, 05:46 PM
Great, what do you think, a single sheet of acylic and some rods?

a small sheet. It comes in 4x8 from plastic supply houses. or are you talking about the home depot sheets?

Europhyllia

I'm interested, too. What are the requirements for the group buy?
we usually all order separatley but use the MAAST option as our shipping choice (will have to be set up by vendor). Then it gets shipped to the organizer and we pick up the day it arrives

allan
Thu, 17th Jun 2010, 08:04 PM
yep, Karin's on target.

Jack, is a four by eight a small sheet? Oh, and I don't have a drill press. I would think that would make it easier... maybe I can talk my wife into letting me buy a table top drill press.... I mean I'm gonna get a table top drill press and I'll let her know later that it's in the garage.

txav8r
Thu, 17th Jun 2010, 11:22 PM
No. That would be a full sheet.
I have a small drill press.

'k, I'll price the halfies at allied today. I believe they're right up the street from where I work. I'm on the Man-Bike and thus will not be able to pick up today, but perhaps over the weekend or sometime in the coming week I can pick it up and some rods as well.

Europhyllia
Fri, 18th Jun 2010, 09:03 AM
so is a half sheet 2x8 or 4x4?
(not trying to bust in on your project but I need some 2x6 acrylic so I am wondering...)

txav8r
Fri, 18th Jun 2010, 09:56 AM
half would be 4x4 but I believe they will cut you any size you want.

I've spoken to them before and they did say they'd cut me any size piece that I need.

ceriths and nerites are a pretty good bet for cyano. i tried a unicorn once but it couldnt hold its breath long enough.

Kristy
Tue, 22nd Jun 2010, 08:59 AM
Hello... unicorn tang?

I think we could add a few to our CUC as well so I'll be starting the wish list.

allan
Tue, 22nd Jun 2010, 09:44 AM
Roger Kristy

I don't like the unicorn tang, wife does though. Another testament to my mancard status, no unicorn tang in the tank.

I'm going to do a pretty sizable order in an effort to get on the front end of cuc status. So far I've been half stepping, but I've been pleased so far with the results of what reefcleaners has sent.

Kristy
Tue, 22nd Jun 2010, 09:55 AM
I was just checking out the website... definitely want some more dwarf ceriths as we used to have lots more than we do now and they are great grazers. Probably a few other miscellanous snails and if John says nerites might help with cyano, well then let's add some of them.

Europhyllia
Tue, 22nd Jun 2010, 10:10 AM
Th nerites are awesome. Eating lost of stuff and very hardy. Wasn't super careful during the emergency evac as far as snails are concerned and found some outside on the porch in yucky hot old stagnant water, put them back in the tank and they're still cruising...

tebstan
Tue, 22nd Jun 2010, 12:03 PM
I want more chitons, those little fellas are awesome. Thinking about conch and limpets too. Anyone tried them?

And the ceriths... are the dwarf or Florida going to do better with shipping, or no difference?

allan
Tue, 22nd Jun 2010, 02:47 PM
I thought about the conch as well. I'm definitely getting more chitons.

Just waiting for my buddy to get back from MN and then we'll start getting hot and heavy on this order.

IDK, best bet is to talk to JohnMaloney or preview their website. I think it's www.reefcleaners.org (http://www.reefcleaners.org), but you can see it under John's signature block early on in this thread.

johnmaloney @ Reef Cleaners

Hair algae is a pain for a few reasons, not the least of which is that the good hair algae eaters tend to have drawbacks:

(Ordered from what eats the most per specimen, to the least per specimen. Species of course differ in size though)
Sea Hare - eats tons. An adult breeding spotted or flying sea hare can eat a quart of algae a day. WOW :) ONly problem is they get stung by nems, aggressive coral, don't play well with powerheads, can ink if dropped during shipping and then succumb to the degradation in water quality, (in your tank ink is only a mild irritant and carbon clears it up), and are tend to starve later on when the algae clears up. Sometimes local groups pass one around, but you still have to have the right conditions for it.

Urchins - Also good hair algae eaters. Pincushions, rock boring (short spine) and then the pencils is probably the order there of types of urchins and how effective they are. Pencils may eat byrozoans and small tunicates, pencils from the Pacific ocean may eat soft coral, but no worries there, I dont even think those are in the hobby. Regardless, urchins will scratch acrylic, and eat your coralline. Pincushions, and short spines to a lesser extent may bulldoze around the place a bit, and they may wear things in your tank to camouflage themselves.

Turbos - good cleaner for the size, can be a bulldozer. Should be righted when possible.

Chitons - Good cleaner, long lived, prone to nitrate poisoning though. Good for older tanks that just have a stubborn spot, as they tend to live in a small area in your tank

Hermits - can have behavior issues, other than that good cleaner and hardy. My pick for tanks with a hair algae outbreak and high nitrate/phosphate limited systems

Okay, just received a pm from john. He said he can ship on the 9th for a 10th delivery date so we're good to go. I had meant to close out the orders on the 10th with a delivery on the 11th or 12th but can certainly work under the 9th.

So go ahead and start placing your orders or looking to see what it is you wish to order. I imagine that it will be under "MAAST Group Buy" but if given the choice I would have went with "Unicorn" :-)

Please tally here so that we can ensure a sufficient order to negate the shipping cost.

Sorry guys, I didn't realize there were more questions on here from my phone.

Dusty,

I think I only needed your actual numbers to be aware of whether we made the minimum purchase or not. But we have surpassed that so we are good to go, just let me know to expect it and I will be ready to not be surprised to see another name in the box when it arrives.

DANVAN,

I live just north of 1604 to the East of the 281 corridor. That being said please read below...

To each that are placing an order here.

The 10th I will anxiously await arrival at my house. Not sure what time delivery is, I'm thinking John will probably chime in here to let me know. If it's in the morning (I'm thinking it won't be till around lunch or after) you all are welcome to come over and we can drink coffee and talk all things salty while we wait for our creepy crawly cleaners to arrive.

During lunch, I can have a six pack handy and we can drink a brewski or two but I couldn't good concience allow you to leave my humble abode inebriated so there would definitely be a two drink maximum should you desire to pursue this particular venue as it will most likely be a stated fact that at some point you will not be wanted in my house, particularly if you find yourself still at the kitchen table when dinner is set :). Being a Chief in the Army I am quite content to drink coffee all day so we would be set in that respect.

For those of you that can wait till Wednesday (providing the package arrives on Tuesday) I work at Fort Sam. On Wednesday, if it helps you out, I can travel the 281 corridor to 35 where I will go north approximately 300-350 meters where I get off at New Brunsfel Street. I would be happy to bring your order with me on this journey and stop at any location along that route that will benefit those of you not willing/wanting to come out to my domicile.

We can just call that my own particular Servant Style Leadership. :-)

I actually work in the old USAA building across the street from post, in direct line of sight of the quadrangle. I didn't realize that the 10th was Tuesday. I thought I would have a long weekend.

Oh well.

Ramsey, no worries about the crying inside... at least it wasn't on the outside as men are forbidden to do this. :)

Speaking of which, I've got to get on reefcleaners and order a short pokey thing urchin, pink tips... anyone have any experience with these in their tanks?
