I picked up the 75g tank combo last night. Was a little disappointed because it looked pretty dirty, stand is definitely DIY with plywood doors and the reef ready only applied to the drain. The second overflow box doesn't have a hole drilled on the bottom and is supposedly a 'powerhead box'? If I had had more time I probably would have considered having a hole drilled under the second overflow box and made that my return.
Right now I am running my own old return pump with my own plumbing because the return plumbing that came with the tank needed some adapter hardware to fit onto my pump.
It's black tubing that splits into a 'Y' using a SCWD. It switches output between the two return nozzles in the opposite corners of the tank and I bet that would be kind of cool too.
Never heard of a powerhead box before...
Then again I also had never heard of reef ready when I purchased my 125g combo last year and in many ways the ugly little 75g combo would have made a much better reef starter tank than the snazzier 125g.
There's lots to like really. The doors are plywood but they are huge, meaning the front opens completely leaving full access to the sump, which was also included -again appears to be home made but well thought out, functional and sturdy.
The old 125g just came with a bioball thing so the 75g combo is already ahead in that.
The 75g has an oversized drain and it's a bit noisy but it definitely drains well and not having to rely on the siphon really is very nice.
The 75 has black overflow boxes on a black back. I didn't think I would like that but I really do! It actually makes a very nice backdrop in black!
It came with a canopy which of course I don't use.
And oh did I mention everything is black?
As dirty as it was I figured it would take me forever to clean but it actually wasn't too bad and cleaned up pretty well.
Still took forever and the fish didn't actually go into the tank until around 11:30 last night.
Initially I had second thoughts about buying it but when I got home and found my little Blue Gold blenny dead it felt all worth it to save the rest.
It's actually a very nice set up and I'm hoping to be able to resell it at little or no loss in a couple of months

Since it was getting late I pretty much threw everything in there in a hurry so no complaining about aquascaping and livestock arranging please! Speaking of placement: in the holding tub the acan echinata was able to reach my Duncans and frogspawn and kill most of it. :(

The anthias, clowns and PJs all appear to be doing well and already ate last night (were pretty hungry since I didn't dare feed in the tiny 10g)
My female mandarin came back from the 10g with a white patch on her back. Could be just a bite wound from living in such close quarters with a bunch of other stressed out fish.
I had been dosing Stressguard and Prime to optimize water conditions and give them whatever protection I could.
Hopefully it will be enough.
I am looking forward to seeing them once the main lights come on. Fingers crossed.

Oh thank goodness! Maybe that was just her stress coloration?

I am so relieved you decided to do the 75 for now! Definitely think this was the best choice for your livestock.

Looks great Karin! What's the story with the "powerhead box"? That's funny.

So glad everyone has a place to call home until the big tank gets there!

I know! Weird right? He said it was to balance the other box and hide your powerheads in...? Everything is there though so whoever gets it later can just get a hole drilled for $25 and should be good to go...

Is the box acrylic or does it have any holes on the side thats in the tank? Any pics of it?

The "powerhead box" sounds like an old Supreme Aquamaster filter box. They were simple - just a rectangular box you hung on the back, and it had a monster pump that fit on top of the box, and filtered the heck out of your water. No cartridges, wheels, balls, etc. Just filter material and carbon.

here's a closer look at the powerhead box. Really it looks like a regular overflow box only it doesn't have the hole in the tank for the return

it's not a hang on.
It's siliconed in and has the same dimensions as the overflow box on the drain side. looking at the tank it looks exactly like a regular reef ready tank with two overflow boxes (siliconed inside the tank) - only that one doesn't have a bulkhead on the glass floor.

It might make more sense to see it in context:

If I were to keep this tank I'd probably just have it drilled for $25 bucks on the 'powerhead box' side and run the return up that box, add a locline thing and have the locline nozzles come out of the two round holes (size would be perfect for lockline)

I have seen a setup like this one before. The box is quite literally a place to put some powerheads. They go inside the box with the outputs sticking out of the holes. Them usually you put those on a wavemaker. It also helps to visually balance out the reef ready overflow box, as well as a place for flow to push the water back to the overflow to be filtered.

well there you go. that's what it is then ;)

all fish are looking good and happily eating and exploring. Urchins are cruising, oyster and clams are open. I am hoping the Duncans, Frogspawn and blenny will be the only casualties...

I think they're going to make it!!!
All of them are acting completely normal. Begging for more food as usual. SO glad I got this tank! :)

just wanted to say how fantastic it is to wake up and figure out that all I have to do aquarium related today is to feed the fish and that's it. Priceless. I'll actually will be able to get stuff done other than tank work

I think we dodged the bullet. Everything is looking great. Even the more sensitive organisms like the tuxedo urchins haven't lost a single spine and are just happily cruising.

The funky little set up is growing on me as well.

I am considering keeping it and making it into a FOWLR!

For example I always thought cowfish were really neat but just got too big. I did some searching and found a Thornback Cowfish that stays under 6 inches!
And I'd love to have a spiny boxfish.

I'll have to do some thinking on where this might fit as a second tank. :)

Glad to hear everything is doing well!
I think the FOWLR tank is a great idea! Keep us posed

I thought you seemed awfully interested in the box fish and puffer fish! Someone has FOWLR envy. ;)

Our "FOWLR" is going to prob end up with a bunch of mushrooms, pink pulsing xenias, gsp, teal palys, and Kenya trees from our other tanks. All that live rock needs some pretty color and no big loss if it gets eaten.

Got my vote for a FOWLR! I've had always wanted one....but that would have to be a thrid tank...man I need another room.
